The final round was the king of BBQ, the beef rib. The announcer really got the crowd hyped. They were all cheering so loud, Kimmy had a hard time hearing what was being said. “This is it ladies and gentlemen, the finals you have been waiting for. These two hard fought contestants have earned their spots here, and this looks to be shaping up to be a pretty excellent final. And what would the final round be of a BBQ eating competition if not sweet and succulent delicious… RIBS!” The crowd went wild, as two big plates of ribs were carried out. “In this winner take all finale, it's going to be a fight to the finish, no easy way out here. These two will go until one of them calls it quits.”
‘Holy crap’ Kimmy thought. ‘This totally changes the game.’ But Kimmy had no choice than to just soldier on. She had to win this, she had come so far. She knew she could do it, but it was pretty intimidating to go head to head against such a fierce competitor.
Finally after what seemed to be a much longer time between rounds the whistle finally blew, and the two of them dug into their plates. The ribs were almost falling off the bones, they were so juicy and tender. Kimmy was so focused, she couldn’t stop for event a moment to wipe the juices as they dribbled down the side of her face and on to her round chin.
As the bones piled up, the plate of ribs emptied. Kimmy had one goal, not to fall behind, she wanted to make sure she was keeping pace with Quinn. Rib for rib they went, neither one of them showing any signs of a slight lead. And pretty quickly the first plate had been emptied by both of them and a second one replaced it.
Kimmy knew she felt full, but she knew she had to eat past that feeling. She had done it numerous times before, and this time so much more was on the line. After all these rounds, it was no wonder that either of them still had any room left, but they continued to suck down rib after rib. Kimmy just kept telling herself ‘One more. Just one more.’ over and over again.
They each showed signs of slowing down, for which Kimmy was thankful. She knew she could keep going, but if Quinn was slowing down that meant she was beatable. Although Kimmy had slowed her pace, after a few more ribs Quinn seemed to be going at a snail's pace. ‘OMG this is it!’ Kimmy cheered in her head. Finally Kimmy leaped ahead by a few ribs, and continued to push on.
Quinn tried to continue, but it was fruitless, she had reached her limit and was not going to be able to keep up. She waved the white flag, signalling Kimmy to toss her half eaten rib back down on her plate. She had done it, she had actually won. The crowd was going wild, and before she even realized Veronica had come up out of the crowd to congratulate her, and help her up. Everything was a blur, but she knew one thing for sure, she was a winner. Kimmy slowly rose, with Veronica’s help, and was waddled into position at the front of the stage.
She could hear the announcer going on and on, and she could see flashes of photographers snapping pictures of the winner, but Kimmy was in her own world at the moment. It wasn’t until now that Kimmy realized how big and taut her stomach was. It rounded out further than it ever had before, and was as hard as a basketball to the touch. She had never been this full before, but it had all been worth it. The month of training, putting herself up on this stage despite all her nerves, it had all been worth it.
She was handed a trophy and an envelope with her check. She would have taken a bow as the crowd cheered for her at the end, but she wasn’t able to physically. She just waved, as she was escoarded off the stage by the staff and her coach.
Kimmy slowly put on foot in front of the other, focusing on just trying to not jostle her stomach too much. Finally they were behind the stage, and it was much quieter again for the first time in which seemed like forever. Kimmy’s coach needed to congratulate her one more time. Kimmy felt a sense of pride in winning this thing, but she also felt glee for her coach, as she might not have been able to win without her. So this was almost as much a win for her as it was for Kimmy.
Veronica helped Kimmy slowly waddle to her car before taking her home. Walking in the door of her house, she couldn’t wait to tell her mom the good news, after all they nay saying she had done all month. “Mom, Mom!” She waited until she heard some rustling in the study. “I won the competition today!” She said with excitement.
There was a pause, but finally she heard. “That’s great dear, congratulations.” In a less excited tone than Kimmy had delivered her news. “I’m just finishing up some work, but your father should be home with dinner within the hour, so make sure you are cleaned up.” The thought of food made Kimmy’s stomach churn. She wasn’t going to need to eat again until tomorrow, but who knows, maybe in a couple hours she could bring herself to have a few slices of pizza.
