This is irritating to me because it - and opinions like it - lead to the kind of emotional territory where people avoid taking ownership of their own decisions and their own mental health, even when it comes to acknowledging that they may be in a bad place and seeking out resources that can help them cope. In this case, the ex-patron seems to believe that he's not responsible for his own emotional needs and wants, and that by somehow telling stories that resonate with people, or even offering them fictional intimacy (honestly, we've rehashed this same argument when it came to romance novels written at women, and YA novels written for kids, but it always seems to be directed at women, for SOME reason) is somehow an either/or when it comes to dealing with those emotional issues. Listen folks: go to therapy. talk to a counselor. get help however you need it, and if you feel like your attention to fictional media is in an unhealthy place, disengage and come back when you're in a better headspace. Like every form of media, it's toxic to your mental health when the lines between reality and fantasy start to blur and you, yourself, can't tell the difference anymore - because I assure you, the people creating that media DO understand that difference, and many people who enjoy that media do as well. But if you find yourself in a space where you can't, you need to stop and get the help you need, not put that responsibility on to the creators of or the consumers of that media and say to yourself "no, I'm fine, it's society that's broken in this way, and that's what's emotionally scarring me." Your emotional scars are real, but this media isn't what's reminding you of them. You just don't know how to deal with those scars in a healthy, personally fulfilling way, and that's what you're seeing rise to the surface when you feel that anger or distaste. The issue is yours to work through - with help, of course! And you CAN work through it, I promise you that. But taking it out on others is never the way, and never going to help.

As bad as it sounds, I can’t argue with it. It’s true. I wouldn’t be a patron of most of my different subscriptions if I hadn’t been scarred emotionally the way I have, and I feel strictly obligated to keep giving money even though I haven’t listened to some of them in months. It’s unhealthy and a waste of money, but that’s just how it is. I’d feel too guilty to end my subscription to ever stop and that’s not a good way to cope. Roleplaying stories are unique because they purposefully set your mind into believing it’s somewhere it isn’t and giving comfort that is normally only provided by real intimacy, which leaves me feeling fulfilled in the moment, but still hollow inside. It feels like an addiction. I don’t hate anyone and I sincerely thank them for making what they do and helping me, but it becomes unhealthy once I start spending money even when I don’t use their content anymore purely out of of the feeling of needing to pay nonexistent dues. No matter how I look at it, they make a good point. Selling fake intimacy for real money will always be ethically questionable. It leaves me with a pit in my stomach.

Onlyfans'/twitch model preys on people who don't know how to manage their money. Your average movie is an hour and half and costs about 10 bucks. Books can last you longer and usually cost a bit more. Most patreon smut costs about 10 dollars, and most provide over an hour and a half of content a month. Further, a movie has to play to several demographics and might include material that you sit through without caring about. Also you gotta go to a theatre and deal with people. A patreon content creator generally has a more hyper-specific niche, so you can bet you're getting a higher percentage of your time not-wasted :P. there is certainly an argument to be made for simp culture being a problem, but I really don't think patreon is the best hill to die on for that. Especially tea's patreon. Easily the most content for my money of the few patreons/subscribestars i have signed up for.

What this is is not “preying.” This is simply supply-and-demand. A demand or market for “emotionally damaged men” (they forgot that women can have these problems too, so… oops) has been around for years. Why do you think psychiatrists became a thing?
