Setting Up A "Business/LLC?"
Added 2018-03-23 21:39:39 +0000 UTCJust a question if anyone knows anything about this stuff, I wouldn't mind a little advice.
First off, I live in the US so keep that in mind.
Anyway, I was wondering if it would be a good idea or a bad idea for me to open a "business". I only ask because I am thinking about quitting my job and doing this full time. Also, I have a lot of expenses (voice acting, electricity for rendering, texturing, software, plugins etc...).
I know exactly 0% of anything to do with this but I don't know if it would be somehow financially better for me to do this as a business or if I should just keep it personal.
If you have any advice, please feel free to private message me or post here. As always, I appreciate any help or advice that I can get.

My advice is to not take advice from random folks on the internet. But then I am a random person on the internet. Having said that, get yourself a small business adviser you can meet in person.

2018-03-24 16:59:00 +0000 UTCA lot of this depends on what state you live in and what state you want to base your company in. Also what type of business you want to have. I own one of the largest IT services companies in the Southeast and would be more than happy to give you any help I can.

2018-03-24 12:44:06 +0000 UTCIf you make the jump to full time animator I would move to a state with a lower cost of living. Since you can do your job anywhere with an Internet connection and electricity. I live comfortably off of $1,000.00 a month.(so think rural Midwest) Also I live in a 3 bedroom house with a 2 car garage for $50,000. Fully paid off. Just my 2cents take it for what it is.

2018-03-24 10:45:41 +0000 UTCLike an expensive condom - - As an accountant, that deals in type of thing on the reg, there is absolutely no downside to establishing an LLC - other than the initial filing cost. Knowing what I know now, I'd say that getting set up as an LLC is a great way to protect yourself. Don't let the technicalities keep you from keeping yourself save. If you seriously need some help, give me a shout and I'll see what I can do,

2018-03-24 04:42:32 +0000 UTCI told you you'd be starting your own animation studio one day :-) Maybe someday I can come work for you in some capacity.

2018-03-24 04:27:40 +0000 UTCSome very good advice above, but one thing I do know is that you have a talent and a great imagination there are a few other people out there doing the same thing, but what makes you different is your storyline, and the talking, nothing more boring than watching a fuck scene to music or in silence. You are able to put the two together, so much better than the rest, so power to you, don't stop, and Please start a company, so you can expand, and look forward to the day you can tell your boss to Fuck Off. Yeeeehaaa

2018-03-24 02:22:47 +0000 UTCIt all depends on what you want to do with your business. an LLC (Limited Liability Corporation) often requires you to set up potential investors and a business plan to create an entity separate from yourself to limit the liability of finances, but, if it's just you, a sole proprietorship should be just fine and dandy. It also will make taxes a LOT easier until you're earning above the hobby amount. Having the tax id for a company, an EIN and such, can be useful if you're purchasing business-related items from agencies that wouldn't otherwise sell, but you can do that as a sole proprietorship as well, as I have with my own home business.

2018-03-24 02:10:33 +0000 UTCTrue in a form of expansion before you start a company it would be very beneficial of you to develope some connections to other famous artist my suggestion youtube for example for something outside of porn of course just to get your artwork style out there maybe get to touch with other youtubers working with them to get better vids I would love to see your work with squeak anon and a doctor whooves episode or even in music tons of room there and then of course theres merchandising toys t-shirts novelties all basic necessities for artists those are just my thoughts anyway

2018-03-23 22:55:03 +0000 UTCOne more thing. Your animation is outstanding and would not limit yourself to porn. As an Animation factory, you could offer services in a number of different arenas

2018-03-23 22:51:58 +0000 UTCAs the gentleman above eluded to, good porn is totally economy proof.

2018-03-23 22:38:34 +0000 UTCIn exchange for a small piece of the action. Instead of a flat fee at a minamal amount, a larger sum for a small percentage

2018-03-23 22:36:56 +0000 UTCYour work is pretty good and amazingly original. Perhaps instead of patrons, consider investors. I for one would consider a simple straightforward contribution

2018-03-23 22:22:21 +0000 UTCThis is gonna sound weird but i think theres gonna be a economic crash in america soon. So i would wait until after all that calms down to start up a business. But then again maybe your porn will be so amazing that no one will be able to resist even amongst a recession. That said, i would look more into your options until then and just study. I was actually gonna start my own business recently until i started looking into finance and economics. I still plan to, but i plan to first save my money into assets and commodities in case the dollar tanks. Then wait until the crash happens. Then start the business. Everyone whos a bigwig in the investing arena knows theres going to be a crash soon.
2018-03-23 22:16:40 +0000 UTCOH thats so cool. I didnt even know you could do that online that is awesome, thank you!

2018-03-23 22:14:25 +0000 UTCGood point... I am very nervous about what my electric bill will look like. My last one was $400 with just my 1 computer rendering all the time overnight :(

2018-03-23 22:13:59 +0000 UTCThanks Cwolf... yeah I agree I should wait a little while. But I am very much looking forward to going to my boss and tell him I hate him and that I quit.

2018-03-23 22:13:23 +0000 UTCIt's all about a good budget, if you plan it out properly you'll be able to make a good profit each month, because part of your power and the cost of voice actors etc would be tax deductible. But I'm in Australia, so I am unsure what the go is in America. Maybe keep it personal for now and wait until the money coming in is definitely "sole income" level? Also you should probably check to see if this income from patreon needs to be declared on your tax just so you don't get screwed over. Hope this helps. Love your work. :3
Cwolf
2018-03-23 22:01:45 +0000 UTCI say it would if you opened up a business maybe figure up cost per month to keep you running and a paycheck and maybe charge a bit more for Patreon. But that’s just my opinion I’m not to business smart lol

2018-03-23 21:59:38 +0000 UTCYou might want some umbrella liability insurance for artists in case you get sued for copyright infringement or defamation or something like that. Umbrella liability is fairly cheap

2018-03-23 21:53:08 +0000 UTCThere could be other reasons that are more applicable, as I said this is definitely not my area of expertise. Hopefully one of your followers will have more knowledge of the subject

2018-03-23 21:51:05 +0000 UTCOh well I guess that wouldnt benefit me at all.

2018-03-23 21:48:56 +0000 UTCDefinitely not my area of expertise, but afaik, the primary reason for setting up an LLC is to separate yourself from the business. (eg, if the business went bankrupt, you wouldn't lose any of your personal finances)
