Here's my old palette file I used when I laid out different flat tones for different areas. I'd put two on my Photoshop paintbrush at a time- one foreground and one background- and hit X to cycle back and forth. I'd go through my whole page putting each pair of colors were they needed to go, do the next pair and repeat until I was done. Tone 1 was basic caucasian skin tone, blonde hair and any white shirts anyone might be wearing, including Alice's nurse hoodie. Tone 2 was for darker things like Lizzie's workshirt or most peoples' boots, it was also the base value for Alice's hair. Tone 3 was a middler mid tone and was used for stuff like Lou's coat collar and Lizzie's hoodie and Tone 4 became Lou's jacket, Alice's paints, Monday's coat and hair. M1 and M2 represent dark values in Monday's suit that no one else really used. Black and white are on the left side and the red is the same red I've used for the past seven years, Pantone 180 C (the official Dead Winter red color). Nowadays when I use one flat tone for all silhouettes I use Tone 3 because it's nice and middly. This is mostly a relic of the old way I used to make comics but it's still fun to share, and you can see how I tried to group my flat tones into distinct, reusable values instead of having a million separate colors for everything. That sort of economy doesn't work quite so well when you're working in color, but that's a story for another day!
