Hello again! I've got a fun progress report for you: this comic page should be ready probably between now and Halloween, so you'll for sure have a nice treat by Sunday. I honestly would have had it done today but my other gamedev job needed a bunch of work done so I had to spend some time over there; I -did- make some more progress on the Dead Winter game stuff, which I'll be writing a post about after this. Busy busy. Right now let's talk a bit about the comic, though.
Painting these pages has been pretty straightforward, with set outdoor lighting and normal everything else. The real fun part of this page in particular has been the two flashback panels. Blocking in where the cone of light each light source casts really cuts an interesting shape in the panels; I've also been painting Alice in a way like if that light source was affecting her as well. The real fun of the panels, though, is painting in the little flashback people. One of the things I like to do is style emulation, where I copy the style of another artist to draw like them, so when I was thinking about how to paint these flashbacks I thought I'd style copy myself from however many years ago. I had a blotchier, streakier style back then, where I used a lot more stark value contrast and tended to paint hair by scratching my pen in long strands, so in painting the little Lizzies and Alices in these flashback shots I decided to paint it just like that. It's a very small detail but I think it's good.
I'm excited about how close this page is to finished. I think this will be three pages in a single month (?) which would be a new record for me. Also, there's a very clear follow-up point to this page that I'll get to draw for the first time, but that will be a story for next time. For now, though, I'm gonna type up my gamedev post and get back to work; you should see another post with the textless page very shortly. Until then, have a lovely holiday weekend!
