AI...

I recently tested an AI tool to bring one of my artworks to life. I’m still torn: on one hand it feels odd since you don’t animate or create it yourself, but on the other hand I see huge potential—AI will only become more present in the future. Personally, I hope AI will evolve as a helper inside tools like Blender, where you can stay in control and use it to speed up the workflow. What’s your take on this?

I don’t mind it personally but I do understand why people hate it

My take on AI usage within art is that ultimately there's too much indirect 'theft' of work involved for it to feel clean. Most of these AI models are trained on the work of artists without their explicit consent and support. Either through direct illegal usage or hiding a "We're going to use your work for AI" clause somewhere embedded deep inside a EULA nobody has time to read. Using an AI tool is thus using another artists work without crediting them, supporting them financially or having their consent for other reasons. Not all AI's are trained like that, but the ones that offer the best results need the widest pool of training data and getting all that training material is something you're not supposed to look into as far as the companies are concerned. I do think AI will play a bigger role in future, so long as the bubble doesn't burst. (AI is unprofitable right now for the most part, people are dumping money into it in expectation of future return on investments, we'll have to see if that turns up.) But if we want to use it in an ethical way we need to have transparent licensing agreements between creators and AI companies. Keep in mind that an AI cannot create anything truly new, merely reuse and remix ideas thrown into it's blender. You learning how to animate things yourself and bringing your own vision is not only actually new, but also truly yours as nobody else's work is being exploited to make it.
