In fairness, once he leaves the sinking whale, using Refrigerate is going to be a really really fast way to get to the surface. The whale can sort of touch him inside - that's what the motorsaw-teeth-throat-lining is for - but yeah, that's not going to be enough to crack Rain. The main problem, of course, is that Rain doesn't have the time to wait 30 minutes - there are other whales after the ship...

The whale has to dive back down after at most 30 minutes, and a higher-ranked zone would allow Rain to do something like 1M DPS to it. The whale can't really touch him inside of it's own stomach. Then he'd have to pray that the whale floats back to the surface rather than sink further down. Using a Refrigerate Nova in the depths of the ocean sounds like a great way to call a Leviathan.

This is worth testing: If Rain does an Aura singularity in this situation... does the monster get hit? I mean, the aura is inside Rain, but technically it's inside the monster too, so... I wonder which of Spring or Summer are better for holding your breath longer; Rain might need it if the Whale dives. I guess Rain could purify CO2, but could he purify specifically carbon atoms, leaving O2?

While Purify is mostly used on dirt and filth, and that's what you get when you reverse it... Obliterate seems made for tunneling through rock. As such, I expect there's a dimension somewhere full of obliterated rock (and the occasional body part) waiting for someone to summon them. Rain could just summon a hundred tons of rock and weigh down the whale until it sinks to the bottom...

It needs 10 skill in the 4 Imperial auras, including 1 we don't know the name of yet. Those auras require maxing the wells, which is also going to take a while when confined to a ship. OR does Ameliah have some cheat from her class that allows her to ignore some of the requirements, that I have forgotten?

2023-03-06 14:12:03 +0000 UTCThis chapter greatly raises the stakes, and I'm sure SS has a plan, even if I have a hard time seeing where we're going from this. I just really hopes he avoids making the inside of the monster less dangerous then standing in front of it. So many stories does that, but here we're dealing with a intelligent monster more than 10 levels above Rain. There's plenty of reasons for why even the inside of it can hit the damage limit against "food". And being inside a stronger hostile soul should just make it worse.

2023-03-06 06:31:25 +0000 UTCHm, if he purchased Impediment, would it impede the Whale's chewing? Would Discombobulate do sufficient MP damage to cause hallucinations? Probably the Whale's soul is tough enough to resist, though. The sad part is that if normal physics were in play, Rain would be the Whale's kryptonite. Auras affect a huge volume. Whales *occupy* a huge volume. But that's all irrelevant since an attack gets resolved as hitting a single entity... Hmmmm. Mlem's Skipping Stone. Yes, that would have been ideal for Rain to have in this situation. Assuming it'd trigger on hitting the sea surface, of course. And that Rain could pick it up again before it sank. Since the Whale has such great pools of HP, MP and SP, about the only thing left is to reverse Purify and hope the monster spits him out from sheer disgust. But do monsters even have a sense of taste? Making them picky about their food doesn't seem like it would be a big priority for whoever designed them...

The danger and significance of Whales has been built up over time - if anything having Temerity and Rain manage oceanic travel without dealing with a big obstacle like Whales and other sea monsters would have been whats "cheap".

Either this gets resolved in the next chapter, Rain thinks of something or the rest of ascension does. Or he's gonna spend a a while/ a few chapters inside the stomach of the whale. In the first instance this just feels like a dick move, a cheap emotional strike. If him getting eaten by a whale won't have long term impact than why do it? In the second case we've had something like this happen before when the watch braced Velika and got slaughtered. Rain spent quite a few chapters being a non entity without agency, probably my least favorite part of this story so far. I just can't help but feel that it would have been better to avoid this all together and not have Rain get eaten by a whale and then end the chapter. I will say that I prefer the first instance of the second one since the big issue here is that you have to wait a week to find out anything, if I could just turn the page and read on then this cliffhanger wouldn't feel like such a punch in the nuts. Oh well, I hope SS puts on his robe and wizard hat and writes something awesome.

The second window, after saying he dials it up, shows the exact same numbers except the cost goes down to around 0.3 mana. Not sure which aspect of the spell you were saying he ramped up, but those two windows are definitely wonky.

Because it seem really that sea travel is really shit, so i question if they not developped/have plane or dirigible thing similar, or magic shit for travel by air instead of sea who seem way more problematic to do (as far as i know, we have zero info about air travel aspect or etc) find it a bit strange

Getting eaten is exactly what he needs to survive. He will even get another nickname from getting eaten alive by a Whale as a low silver and surviving. He may even come back with a higher cap instead of just a fixed soul.

An ideal training place to fix his soul with lots of essence. Though Vatreece never anticipated the stupidity of getting swallowed by a monster as a viable training area.

2023-03-05 06:49:06 +0000 UTCWill Rain pull a Jonah (or maybe Geppetto and Pinocchio) and be a parasite in the whale? He can get a lot of essence inside and survive for quite some time as long as he has air. Will any of his auras give him air or help him make it? Perhaps purify will turn all the gas in the stomach into breathable air. He can freeze the contents of the stomach to make stable land to be able to get into his soul while also preventing him from going further down the digestive system. If he is lucky, he may be able to kill an essence monster from in the whale (maybe whale will eat essence monster and Rain can guide it safely to stomach for him to kill) when it dives back down which will open more options with increased level cap and skill points (getting the seasons, especially Fall for food and water need assuming he doesn’t scavenge what it eats). Biggest issue is getting out of the Whale and crossing the ocean. He has detection anchors on ship plus the radiance Morse code so he can find them and communicate. Worst comes to worst he can just jog/jump while making icebergs. The more I analyze this the more I think that this was exactly what he needs (though not wants) to shelter his mind and fix his soul. Doubt Vatreece ever expected there would be someone stupid enough to solve essence issue by getting eaten by a monster like a Whale. “A Whale I see? Just the right essence-rich environment for me to complete my secluded training arc and solve that pesky time mental time bomb!”
