Do you think the next chapter will be a GrannyBrain chapter, or a Nadir-action chapter? I'm guessing the latter - or at least some behind-the-scenes plotting in Nadir will take place. Maybe Rain will be recognized (by the Bank? The Guild?). There can't be many 'Death Zones' travelling around the world, after all.

If it were me, I'd probably have a big tower with all the different essence-levels layered like a fancy cocktail. Then the different converters would have the density that makes them float at the layer boundary, with the input port on one layer and the output on the next one. The advantage is that you can add a new layer with a minimum of work. Just throw in the new converter units and they'll automatically sink to the right level and start producing the next layer.

2023-08-06 16:12:20 +0000 UTCWhat Reading (in the soul) does is allow one to parse through essence to discern the current and next level of essence. When he first looked at essence it was foundation tier (level 0). He then had to use Reading to get the next pattern/blueprint for the next level. But levels 5 (when Class can be gotten), 25 and other numbers divisible by 25 (50, 75 and 100) are even harder than others. So since Rain was having such difficulty parsing through the Level 25 pattern, he essentially used trial and error to try all possible essence variations to make Level 25 essence without knowing the pattern. He used selective evolution to gradually narrow down the pattern instead of searching for the pattern directly with Reading. He essentially built a finicky microchip (or some other construct metaphor that requires 0 margin for error) without so much as a blueprint by trying all possibilities with the goal of obtaining the blueprint to mass produce more of them. Basically only Rain can use such a time-sink strategy as a Dynamo has that much time. It should generally be more cost effective on time for others to just get the pattern but perhaps other Monolith classes have their own “specialized/stupid” methods too that are inadvisable for others to replicate. The method the system uses to raise one’s level is to kill a system monster whose essence then is used to make a paling of an equivalent level for you to reach and be level capped at. To advance, one would then need to kill a higher leveled monster. But then there is manually increasing your cap which should involve making a new layer to your paling with higher leveled essence. Manually increasing the level of the paling one level at a time should be the original way it was done before the System. The System is an expedient to make going the through the earlier levels quicker, at least until platinum (whether that is because System was unable or unwilling to make platinum essence monsters is unknown as it could just be that one has to do it yourself at that point old school/manually). What I am trying to say is that Rain hasn’t increased his level cap and in fact shouldn’t have even fixed his paling fully yet. His level cap is 30 which means he needs to make a level 31 layer to his paling to increase his cap. He needs silver tiered essence to survive the impending mind wipe that Warden (Granny) Vatreece implanted into Rain as the compromise/ultimatum for him to keep his secrets/knowledge. That being said, pattern 25 as the pattern bridging the gap between bronze and silver, is very difficult. So after upgrading himself to silver essence, the next patterns until level 50 (gold) shouldn’t be as difficult (still a time-sink but manageable). Of course he will need the corresponding amount of essence to refine to get there even with the patterns and that is difficult if you aren’t staying at an appropriate depth.

Anyway, Rain can finally deal with Grannybrain’s ultimatum and get his reward: “knowledge of the Warden” while power lasts (unless he uses his copious time to take ownership so he can charge it and get all info). I think one of the best uses of his questions would be asking about class lists and requirements as well as hidden skills and their prerequisites. Of course he should first ask about the whole “world is being destroyed by reckless power use” and how to solve it at the root but asking about those topics is what Ascension needs as a foundation to stand strong in the short term. I have a theory that the System does have central infrastructure and if it is located anywhere, it should be in the Depths as far as one can go. The story is called Delve so seems fitting that the ultimate goal is to go down and start programming as the new admin. The Warden’s solution (upholding the policy of her predecessors) was to watch over and police the world instead of ruling it as their mission would become corrupted in time if they ruled. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know of a theoretical solution that was too hard or impractical to pull off. Like maybe having a lead about the central hardware of the System located in rank 75+ depths? Was it the fact that they would need a full platinum team (minimum as it might need a level 100 team) to reach it, a lack of knowledge of what to do when there and/or needing a level 100 (god) to do it properly? Something Rain might learn about and has to consider in the far future (especially far with his subjective personal timeskips).

Is Sana doing soul stuff too? Bit of a waste of time if she isn’t considering her Reading prowess. On a related note, Granny Vatreece implied that Rain would take a century of study to start messing with system stuff as well as being platinum. Wonder if she foresaw how being a Dynamo means his study time is ample as long as his mind/Will can handle it? Well good news is that his “cultivator seclusion timeskip” was inside his own soul which means the rest of the world hasn’t left him behind in his “pursuit of power” (surviving the mind wipe in short term and eventually getting strong enough to support and protect Ascension as a long term goal). On a tangent, most egregious timeskip I saw amounted to billions of years (or more) and basically wiped out all known characters that person ever knew (family, those he raised, students, etc) since author was rushing the ending. Anyway, guess with all the time Rain has spent (years) in his soul he had plenty of time to teach Dozer. Bet Dozer is literate now and can help teach the other essence slimes just fine now. He has to take his responsibilities as Progenitor seriously after all
