This one took a lot of rewriting, but I think I convinced the characters to behave in the end. You don't want to see the cutting-room floor.

So what's going to happen in the next chapter, tomorrow? GrannyBrain vs Dozer? Rain and Ameliah vs Burrik? A time skip, with Rain returning to Ascension?

Random Information

It would take a long time to teach anyone the code and would reveal sensitive information about their capabilities.

Daniel Powell

Elemental refinement is a kata, and katas can be learned without wasting a skill point. If Ameliah or another Ascension member picks it up, all Rain has to do is watch and copy. No matter how difficult it is, his clarity gives him both perfect memory and a bunch of spare time in his soul. Hell, he can even just temporarily grab the skill with Unity to help. The only reason for Rain to grab that would be in case it's a prereq for other skills, which it might very well be. We aren't sure if the system would recognize learning on your own perfectly enough to register an awakened as having the skill without actually spending the skill point. But he currently only has 1 more skill point. So even if it is a prereq for other skills, he wouldn't be able to get any skills it leads into for who knows how long. There are much better contenders for that last skill point.

Guess now that Rain’s soul is fixed, he can finally spend his final skill point when back at Ascension and a comprehensive evaluation. My money is he will choose elemental refinement since being able to refill lairs without using Ameliah as an intermediary will vastly increase Ascension’s Awakened numbers and just be useful for working with elemental spells (his auras) in the future. Now they only need a few lairs and teleporter between them (Ameliah can do in a pinch but best to get Lairs and raise one themselves). Plus it is a kata so getting it and spending time on mastering it early as opposed to another skill he can just dump mana into later is better use for time. Plus Unity aura has diminished the immediate need for some other skill contenders like mana sight helping with spell patterns.

Well Grannybrain said “stay away from Kev” so they are doing that. Plus they can’t just do nothing and bank on Grannybrain (Vatreece 2.0 assuming she is now an independent soul paying rent in Rain’s soul) retaining lots of political knowledge and advice. Ascension has to take its first steps onto the world stage at some point and starting with a summarized flyer of past chapters and basic structure is rather innocuous and hard to suffer backlash from. More likely that it can lay groundwork and prevent misunderstandings while they begin to move in earnest. Grannybrain should be up by the time they return to Ascension and start making decisions that could prove more volatile without her knowledge.

Conor McGroarty

He should leave one of his beacons, so they can communicate.

Noah

I think Rain and Ameliah should have delayed doing anything like this until they had talked with Grannybrain.

Random Information

ain't got time for that

abowden

Well, so much for going to level up.

You know, I'm something of a nitpicker myself. Fixed, thanks!

SenescentSoul

Nitpicky, but: Captain is an elected position in Ascension -- 'Captain' is an elected position in Ascension #BugReport

Elaborate

This one felt extra short and really left me wanting more. On the upside, the dialogue was especially entertaining this chapter. There were several points where I was particularly amused. Ameliah's dig at Guilders, the whole Night Cleaner bit, and how the only message they'd have for Foundry would be to "Get Bent."

Ziggy

Awwww, Dozer wants to play with his friend 🥺

Marwolaeth

“You don't want to see the cutting-room floor.” If one can still see the cutting-room floor, one isn’t even trying. On an unrelated note, I want in a couple months a rumour to reach Ascension about two spelunking Silvers with odd names that, funnily enough, translate to ‘Dearest’ and ‘Honey’ in Xiugaraa or whatever that language was called.

Framing Device

Thank you!

Andrew

I would guess it gets the broad strokes of the story's events so far: 1. Adamant Empire invasion begins, Fel Sadanis trapped beneath barrier with Citizens involved. The publicly safe-for-release details of the Dome arc. 2. With the liberated city now in a ranked zone, unawakened left for dead by teleporter price gouging. *Edit: that second part is wrong. City evacuated to DKE by the Watch, Ascension mounts rescue to Vestfall as that town is in danger, getting no support from the Big 3. 3. Rain finds this objectionable, takes survivors on trek across ranked zone surviving on monster (mushroom) meat 4. Months long journey through hostile territory to Three Cliffs in search of naval evacuation. Remember, in the ranked zones monsters can spawn even directly beside people when it's dark... so, surviving this was kind of a miracle in common Dearth perspective. 5. Three Cliffs immediately beset upon by Adamant Empire warships, battalion; Whales. 6. Escape overseas in (stolen?) salvaged Empire ship into the chaos of a nation suddenly missing it's Citizen leaders; Warden and Fecht also believed to die at this time.

Loipers

Does that common knowledge: Ascension include the fact that Rain is from another world or being vague on his origins like he is a “teleported amnesiac?” I assume it basically summarizes the events of previous chapters but still would be interesting to know exactly what was written and how close it is to the events we read? Edit: would be cool if author could whip it up as a chapter .5 without affecting other chapters but would be fine if it only gets done after story ends. Or never and just use my imagination to think about the summary

Conor McGroarty

Awesome, thanks!
