Title is not in reference to the movie. It is actually pretty impressive how pop culture can modify the meaning of a word.

Comments

Im really excited for this new arc. It seems like we may see a lot of character growth from everyone.

PixelBear

I really wish people would stop putting Rain down for asking a bunch of questions. Half the reason their society is so backwards is because nobody gives enough of a damn about anything to make a difference.

Starless

This chapter included a bit about Rain's individual growth. Advancing his stat synchronization looks like what's in our immediate future. And hell it's about time. I'm sick of seeing Rain fold like a used napkin in the face of his own spells because his resiliance/resistances are so low.

Starless

Yea that's like accidentally calling the Drill sergeant just 'sergeant' levels of burpees. With the way this system works, you'd think Rain would invest in some weighted clothes so he can burn through his stamina faster. Actually that gives me an idea; Amelia can constantly use Stamina Well on Rain WHILE he uses Mana Well on her. This would allow Rain to increase his workout to several thousand burpees per day instead of just 100.

Starless

The Sanitizer cometh!!

Clean it to the death!

Dizzregard Home

Dark Janitor kinda sounds like a legit class...

Adam Roundfield

We've now got Chekhov's pain-packet-memories up on the mantle, anyway.

Anon

Restore mana, shield others from physical damage, increase speed..... those are all support abilities. Even if you want to use an extremely narrow definition of "support" then the shielding spells count. Not sure how a haste effect isn't support either. Buffs are, by definition, support spells

Imp

Loved the last line!

Chris Bridgeman

He's not even fully a support build.. he can transfer mana. Thats his main support ability. Everything else is technically either damage or BOTH support/utility(BASED ON IF HE'S GROUPED) his build is more solo than group right now, as he can't use his damage without hurting his group members, as the residual heat/cold hurts anyone. Maybe when(if) he ever gets the force damage aura, because with him excluding teammates from its damage, i assume they just won't be in danger, unlike with refrigerate and the fire one

ZaA

Great chapter. I wish Rain had individual growth but that has been stalled by his cap and damaged soul. Come on watch help a guy out with getting his soul back. No way that mind mage will let Rain go if she gets a look inside. The plate is a nice gesture but I can't help but think that it is a tracker. Still rain is an aura support build so getting a large group of people is a smart move for him but it feels like building economy in a RTS game when you just want to eradicate the enemy. See you next time.

Michael Hughes

The free Beacon is raising an army

Misery

Good chapter and tied up some loose ends, but I'm hoping Rain actually progresses at some point, and you know...delves, or something. I'm not nearly as excited to see him worry and babysit over a bunch of people who will grow when I can't see him do the same.

loved the ending. A touch of humor here and there as leavening is a critical skill many authors never appreciate.

fbt

If they are going to get blues for the unawakened, Rain can share his theoretical build ideas!

Pyrefiend

Really enjoyed the conversation with Tallheart. Feels nice man

Compendium

@Ziggy It's not really about money per se, though. It's about logistics -- providing food and blankets and tents and cook pots and shoes and hundreds of other things that people will need as they travel through dangerous wilderness in winter. He's going to end up with hundreds of volunteers, but he's leaving from a city that had been hit hard by monsters and heat. Do they even have the necessary things available to buy?

David K. Storrs

100 Burpees in a row with 6 strengh is insane. The only way i see that working is with a big stamina pool

Khress

I don‘t think the Warden is „locked“ in, when she scans the mind. The issue with the artifact was the pain, but also the time. And she can just disconnect when the pain comes, and then she has the answer she was looking for

Khress

His resource use xp will forever outpace anything monsters could do the higher the regeneration as he levels the more mana he can use in a day and that will exponentially grow as he levels

Tommy Littlefield

Add to that an hypothetical high level skill that allows him to designate people as Aura Relays withing certain range so that he can channel his auras through them. Seems like a reasonable skill for late silver/gold down Aura Metamagic.

Erasmo Simo

So, lets talk possibilities. Rain got himself a bunch of followers, if he gets all seasonal auras, imperial auras and Primsmatic Intent. Lets assume Prismatic Intent will allow an extra aura per rank, thats at least 11 auras (16 if he gets 5 skills in Aura Metamagic before rank? and extra 3 more ranks if he gets a specialization class bringing it to 19 simultaneous auras?) That would give him a small army with following qualities: * No need to eat (Fall/Autumn aura) * Virutally tireless (Spring aura) * Very low downtime after injuries/all out fight (Summer/Winter aura) * +100 to all stats (Empire Auras, well, I think only Focus, Enduramce and Strenght are confirmed) Even with just the stats unawakend could make for a strong batallion. Of course they would need lots of training to atleast get stats sync up. That still leaves the problem to haow much mana all that would cost, but I'm talking about late silver/early gold and probably 500 chapters later...

Erasmo Simo

so the two voting options are "ok" sign for amelia's distraction and "fistbump" for tallheart

Since the warden experiances a persons memories like she lived through them I assume she's going to have a very bad time if she scans rain accessing the artifact

Books McGee

Rain better hope that exp gained while capped doesn't count to the limit of EXP from a single source, otherwise he's wasted a lot of Mana exp.

And Then There Was None

And while I do appreciate Rain being a good person, I can't say I'm excited about where 'creating' and 'managing' his guild will lead the story. That is, him constantly fretting about the related logistics and issues instead of just exploring, adventuring and delving. It's fine in short bursts, but reading pages upon pages of Rain being stretched thin as he stresses over the million and one problems he put on himself is not fun reading. I leave room to be pleasantly surprised, but Rain's established character does not lend itself well to leadership (at least from a reader's perspective). I see a lot of self recrimination, myriad tangents on what might go wrong and heaps of anxiety laden monologues.

Heraclitus

Even people experienced with languages run into words they don’t recognise. We are always learning and he didn’t have too much context to figure that one out himself

TDMC

Not sure how I feel about this whole psuedo-guild idea. It seems really, really, naive. You would think Rain might have learned by now that poking the guild is going to end up with them bitch-smacking him hard. Does he just not learn from his personal experiences? It'll work out I guess is a very dangerous and dismissive answer to Ameliah's legitimate concerns. Some might see it as his heart being in the right place, but I can't help but be frustrated by his almost blind stupidity. I get that intelligence and wisdom are two different pipes, but geez. And when he finally starts to stem his annoying milquetoast tendencies (a little), he does so by being a naive boyscout. Engaging chapter as always though.

Heraclitus

Fixed, thanks!

SenescentSoul

All fear the Night Janitor, and his slime of cleanliness!!!

Chimera

I hope that there is some overflow error when it comes to gathering xp, maximum effort level up :D Especially if he can use that mana xp glitch he found...

Eric Hartz

Bringing his own team out to make his own Guild, free of the prejudices of this world? Very nice. Exciting!! Loved the punchline of the chap too.

Grevis165

To be fair, the context was a bit vague. Rellagia's bias might not be against being awakened in general but rather gay people being awakened. Can't have any of those homosexual abominations gathering power and corrupting the youth, am I right? smh

Garrett

If he's going to form a wandering band of unawakened in a ranked zone, he's going to need to unlock Fall sooner rather than later... A lot of hungry mouths and not a lot of easily accessed food sources. Unless something changes he can't even get it until level 27 though, and that's assuming the unlock for it isn't having all three other seasonal auras. Maybe Amelia can pick it up to hold the group over until Rain gets it. Side note, I really wish Fall was called Autumn. Fall is such a general word to use as the name of a seasonal aura when Autumn is way more specific and impressive sounding.

Garrett

I completely forgot he's still learning the language

Alexander Dupree

Things are falling in place in such a nice way. The way he has acted in this arc means that he have made the right kind of good impression, that when he make this new company at least some of the greater powers will not consider it as a threat, and might even slightly support it.

Ninetails

Oh thank god. I won't see you bitching and "threatening" to leave now and again over inane things in chapter comments anymore? Sign me up.

Ziggy

Also, random note. Appreciate opening this up in Calibre and it having both the cover art AND fiction name and chapter. No more adding "unknown title"!

Ziggy

I like the idea of Rain having his own Big Boss-style Outer Heaven set up. Mix research into science and the System and a political agenda focused on improving rights for unawakened and strengthening its members, and you have a nice little faction brewing. Have to say though, I really hope they find another Blue soon, cause Rain needs some new Skills!

Adrian Gorgey

Rain making a guild or group was definitely the outcome I expected AND wanted so woot. I wasn't expecting Mlem and Ava to join, that's just a bonus. A lot of good world building this chapter. I'd actually wondered if people were okay with homosexuality in this world before now. That answers that. Rellagia's anti-awakened bias and possible detection is very interesting. And I didn't think about how alien Rain's explanation of his artifact experience would be. That's fair. I also like how you still occasionally remember to use that this isn't his native language now and again. For comedy and otherwise. That was definitely a great last line.

Ziggy

Barely made it quarter way...glad I already dropped you. Rainy day indeed to pick up this waste of space...reminds me of Salamander...with less umph. Quick to create obvious focal points and then obfuscate them into perpetual abyss...because you lack any real path. Wandering out works for some, not this time. Story should be labeled with ‘slice of life’. Was definitely one factor I tried to omit from my searches!

Silver Beard

Quite the big chappy, thanke! Also, another word would be Janitor I believe :}

Deinos

I have no idea what you are talking about. He used iff or whatever it is called only target monsters if that is what you are referring to?

David Otis

Best ending sentence evar!

David Otis

Yup, although it's not like I can't change my mind once I do read it. I haven't so far though.

wanderer117

Thank you!

Andrew

WOOOO nice chapter

Pocket Rikimaru Thanatos

The anticipation that there will be a change is great. Lots of perspective charges were done quite nicely here. Rain seemed to have used a directional aura? Or did he just mage burn Amelia and simply trust in her resistances?

Dragonkinn

Does anyone else rate the chapter when they see it before they read it because they have never seen a bad chapter come out of this story?

David Otis

I imagine rain will set up a city in the deep that wouldn't be possible without his purification or ability to interface with magitech or otherworld knowledge. Like where amelia grew up a free city of the underworld.

J03MAN

Hmm suspicious!!!!!!!!!! Better make sure that thing is on the up and up rain!!!!!

Orion Dye

Honestly "Steward" seems to make more sense than custodian IMO.

J03MAN

Rip Rain's nicknames

Robert

But that level of contribution isn't enough to earn one, I don't know what is. -> But [if] that level...

J03MAN

Hahaha. Love that last line. :)

Brell

I have to say that Rain's plan about making a company and inviting anyone and everyone to join doesn't seem well thought out. I would suggest waiting he has a base set up and reliable means for sustaining the company. Until then, it should be restricted to a small set of people he knows (I think the current cast is pretty reasonable). I can totally see Staavo, Reason, and Myth working together to make lightbulbs and setting up an electrical grid wherever they decide to settle. Also, with Rain's otherworld knowledge, he should have no trouble inventing things and making huge profits if he so desires. I mean, just look at how valuable the DKE's artifact is for long distance communication and how straightforward it will be for Rain to set up a telegraph or telephone system.

ParadoxFox

Ah, so he did ask the Watch to fix his soul, good to know. Too bad they don't seem interested in helping him. At least, not unless he thinks he can deal with someone capable of reading his mind and taking over his body.

ParadoxFox

Been a while since Rain met a word he didn't know.

Signspace

This chapter turned out really well.

Gabriel

All he needs now is a heavily enchanted broom/wet mop combo to clean up the criminals and sweep away the monsters!

Sean Wilner

Lol < something >

Alex Matheny

It is interesting how pop-cultire does that, though within the movie and outside the word means basically the same thing. The creation of or beginning of an idea.
