Updates and a question

On November 3rd, we'll be livestreaming and providing election coverage. We'll start around the time the first results start being released unless something unusual happens during voting. You'll probably get to meet some of the people who are behind the scenes on this and the upcoming second channel. Some may be camera shy, but you'll at least hear their voices.

The first documentary is in final editing, the second is filmed and in early editing but the voiceover isn't done yet, and the third and fourth are in early stages of scripting and recording. It's definitely harder than I imagined, but it's coming along well. Should be easier when we're just doing one at a time.

Once the results of the election are announced, there will be a video message released from myself and more than a dozen other creators who could unify behind one pretty important yet ridiculously simple post-election message.

The question: Would you be interested in access to a Minecraft server that is designed to be more youth-friendly than the discord channel?

Comments

I realize that I'm late to the party. When my sons were playing Minecraft they used Discord. This is precisely why I don't use it...aside from it's another thing to download or learn to use.

...the fact that this poll is still tied is beyond hilarious

I think what you mean by livestreaming is a Live Stream on YouTube, right?

My son plays Minecraft a LOT and is often found on Discord. I'll get his opinion of this when you get going.

I'd join the minecraft server if you had one.

I'm 61, with ADD, arthritis and when video games started on Nintendo I couldn't get Mario on the damned mushroom in the teach you to play section. I couldn't even get out of that section... Only non-gamer in the house. Might follow to discord if I can get the damned thing to work... sigh Having set dates times for get together make easier for those of us with busy lives to set it in the calendar with a link for easier access which is what I do with the other orgs/groups that use the Discord platform. Although just chatting with like minded folk 24/7 is cool too.

nevermind, figured it out once I found the functioning link.

Hello. Can anybody fill me in on how discord works? I'd just like to know in case that's where the live stream on election night will be.

David Messerli

If only I had more time to dork around with bunny trails... this sounds intriguing. :)

We got intro-d to Discord by our kid - it's not a real intuitive platform and I've not yet ever figured out how to see Beau there... seems to me to be a place for LIVE-meeting and off-line random commenting on threads. We use it as the kid doesn't like phone calls. It's like hanging out together in different rooms of the house but still being "present". We know what Minecraft is because of raising a kid in the 90s but it's not something we're into. I'd be up for Beau doing other stuff but wouldn't be my bag. Thanks for the clarification, @ProudCommulist.

I would suggest you look up a group called Hermitcraft for suggestions and advice about setting up a server. The one who runs the Hermitcraft server is named Xisumavoid, but multiple other hermits run servers as well. I’d also suggest talking to a specific hermit named Docm77, mostly for his perspective.

That there.

I'm a 70 yr old woman with arthritic fingers. I'm lucky that I can type a whole senten. . . . .

The minecraft server would be run by thediscord mods for the discord community. Beauwould not have it as engagement on his channel.

Minecraft would be a separate community optional participation avenue

Sorry, I have no thumbs.

I am on discord, but not particularly engaged on BoFC server. I find the number of threads a bit overwhelming and mute most everything.

Sorry for love and war. I have to sign up for discord myself couldn't get it to work a fortnight ago and been taken up with work and other commitments haven't put the time aside to chase it down and get it finalized.

I prefer discord myself. You have more possibilities for expanding in the future with that as well in my opinion and its a good fit to go alongside YouTube. IE: different meeting rooms you can make specific work groups to support projects and give people different access and permissions, I don't think you have that capacity in a Minecraft server. It is also two things to maintain, its harder to do multiple things properly as opposed to one thing properly. In terms of youth oriented, it depends a bit on what the goal is for something like that. If it's just engagement then it's tricky. Something that is a constant like a 24/7 server wont get good engagement and might drive away those who use the current platform your using. Having something that is hosted once a week or once a fortnight and takes up a limited amount of time. I don't know the answer but a good example would be the livestream on twitch that AOC and others did a fortnight ago, got a huge amount of youth engagement for 2-3 hours half a million people tuning in. I don't think you can replicate that but why not make that the goal, its nice to aim high because then falling short is still going to be a good result. Its an example of getting the youth engagement that worked using an online service. If you were to use the channel to host debates between different groups/opinions on specific topics, live stream it for an hour or two hours and allow the people participating to also stream it on twitch or what not. You would be giving up a bit of control with something like that I don't even know if it would work but if you were able to get those larger names and their audience base to tune in to them, from both sides here that's important you might pick up 10% of each audience base and also present the information in a different way. Both of the right and left wing people who tuned in. Personally I think your strength would be in something like that because you have that ability to break down arguments and explain them to people without resorting to name calling. You had Shahid Butter on a fair while ago. As an example, give him an online forum for a debate with XYZ elected democrat, you wont get the old girl herself who he is running against. But you will provide a forum for him and also provide a debate for him against someone else and just make it on one topic. Economic relief package in California and the ramifications for it not going through. If you invite old girl Nancy who wont show up and 3-4 others who wont show up and allow XYZ other media or personality to participate and allow everyone who participates to live-stream it as well on their own platform so that it is more decentralized and your just a moderator. Something like that you can get engagement on it and also explain those ideas with a wider base. In short I don't know the answer, I don't think Minecraft is it but I think having the structure more decentralized and being a host allows you to get other people on that brings in a different audience.

Sorry, not into gaming but sometimes watch others gaming, including those into Minecraft.

I don’t play Minecraft but I have been thinking of checking out Discord. If you went the Discord route that would at least give me the chance to check it out.

I wouldn't ever get on it. Not a gamer. Discord is not super helpful either though, to be honest. Sorry not to have a better idea for you. I mostly watch your youtube videos. I _would_ love to hear helpful and interesting discussion and stuff from Beau and others of like mind.

Jan Kingston

Yes, and I'd give a few extra dollars per month if need be

OTOH, there's a lot about BOFC for which I am not the target audience . . . .

Meg Feeley

Mostly follow you on Twitter and watch your YouTube videos.

No, thanks. Not a gamer. 😊

I'm for anything promoting Minecraft, but at what cost, at what cost?

Kevin Stein

I wouldn't be interested if Minecraft replaced Discord. I just had my GenZ kid learn me up on Discord.
