* Beaulieu Wood October 25th 1941 0130 Zulu Time The just before clear night sky above the Oak Canopy has given way to overcast, but this is no natural occurrence of precipitation, this was mankind's doing. The village of Aisne burns bright orange to the north, just a month before it was a place of celebration and renewed hope. Now it’s just the latest target of Himmlers to break the French. Cold and weeping villagers make their way through the wood ushering their frightened children and elderly through the night, a shaking pregnant mother places her Star of David around her son’s neck to calm him as they approached the old trenchworks his father clutching a old hunting rifle muttered a Psalm under his breath as he hopped a berm into the old earthworks of the last global conflict. Resistance cells rallied to escort the refugees to Sens where they would rendezvous with the Parisian Militia who will take them to Paris. The old Trenches was a planned rest stop for the villagers to get a few moments rest and a chance to warm up, more importantly catch up the stragglers and keep these families together. *0150 Zulu Distant rhythmic thumps and the sound of crunching brush started from the east then the mines were hit. Explosions and panic were triggered simultaneously. Resistance members open fire to the east while a few navigate the refugees through the network of breastworks they built the past few nights to create a Kill Maze for any pursuers. German troops begin their assault on the defenders, they fall back to their maze and lure the troops in making short work of the first wave. Then the second came with grenades but still was pushed back. Third fired their cannons and walked over the trenches now it was the Resistance’s turn to panic. To the Panzers it was like shooting frogs in a small pond, they turned their attention to the still close by fleeing families and began their pursuit. The lead mech caught the rear guard and made short work of them. The second mech went past the lead and was about to get a struggling elderly couple when a cannon ball hits it right in the viewport causing the operator to crash to the side on them as a much younger man with a hunting rifle slung over his shoulder helps them get back to their feet and running best they could. The remaining German mechs raise up their 25mm heavy machine guns and open fire well above the heads of the fleeing refugees. Darting between trees like phantoms, four Renaults with Musketeer colors and crosses make their way towards the Germans gracefully moving through the now scattered fleeing refugees. They draw and successfully dodge fire from the civilians and now to close the gap. They wait till the last moment and fire their one shot hand cannons aiming for joints and hydraulics disabling their immediate opponents and using their enormous Rapiers to finish them off. One German got the better of his assailant and dismembered it before hitting it point blank with its main cannon. It turns to target the other Renaults with its heavy machine gun only have it disarmed by a Rapier they square off in dueling. Then more German mechs came charging from the east and the other two Renaults charged towards them while I got your Pregnant Mother, Big Brother and the nice old Laurents down the street out of the wood and across those fields to Paris. Not stopping till it was all far behind us and in time for Passover or your mother would have me wishing I joined those Riveted Musketeers in that valiant last charge against the Panzers.
