DADAROMA - リズリーサーカス (Risley Circus)

Two words:

Japanese. Kei.

...or you could also call it "visual kei."

It's supposed to be shocking, but for someone like me who used to dress as a goth and then later, punk, this was something really cool to me.

What was more shocking to me was the sound the band made. The music was not what I expected to come from this group from my first impression of the thumbnail. I thought this was going to be way lighter, but the level of heavy coming from this group really popped off here.

Also, the vocals were something else. The use of so many types of voices from vocal fry to screaming and clear singing was impressive.

Definitely check this one out if you enjoy alternative looks with a great sound behind it!

DUH ... not sure what I was thinking but NittPicc has reacted to V-Kei before. Unlucky Morpheus is a Visual Kei act ... although we did not discuss it in that context at the time. I tend to think of UM as a group of extremely talented musicians falling under the symphonic metal genre. See, I fell into the genre trap too :p . It is difficult to take your eyes off of Jill. I don't know why but this Dadaroma video always makes me wonder what lunchmeat and tobacco smoke would taste like together (ew). Would not have been a bad spoopy suggestion.

Risley Circus is about how Dadaroma thinks society views them as a circus, clowns who criticize society to entertain the public. Risley is not the name of a specific circus, but a circus act. The act basically consists of a person lying on his back, turning something over oneself with his hands, feet or other parts of the body. I think as a kid everyone has always wanted to peek inside the circus tent … or maybe even join. As the lyrics state, this is the story of one pierrot, the moonstruck and fantastical clown, who is a symbol for putting on a mask to hide one's true feelings or opinions. There is a lot to be written about V-Kei but for those who are interested in the backstory you may simply go here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_kei Androgyny has always been a big part of V-Kei. While I am not really articulate enough to describe it well, I will give you an excerpt from the wiki - "Visual Style, abbreviated v-kei (V系, bui kei), is a category of Japanese musicians that have a strong focus on extravagant stage costumes that originated in Japan during the early 1980s. Koji Dejima of Bounce wrote that visual kei is not a specific sound, but rather it revolves around the creation of a band's unique worldview and/or stylistic beauty through visual expressions in the form of makeup and fashion. While visual kei acts can be of any music genre, it originated with bands influenced by glam rock, heavy metal, punk rock and gothic rock." Personally I find it a means of self-expression and a way in Japanese culture to “be whatever you want to be”. Pioneers of V-Kei are considered to be X Japan and Buck Tick. Other well-known bands that helped to increase visual kei's popularity include Malice Mizer, Luna Sea, and Dir en grey. Miyavi, who BAND MAID fans may recognize from the movie KATE, is a V-Kei performer. On this track I found the part where Yoshiatsu begins to sing melodically quite pleasantly surprising. I have a few bands that I enjoy in this style for example, Ganglion … from Dimlim to Jiluka it spans genres from pop to punk to metal. I follow bands like The Gazette and Girugämesh which I have already mentioned when NittPicc posted her Patreon announcement. Bands in America like Twisted Sister or Marylyn Manson would be considered V-Kei if they were Japanese. Dadaroma formed in 2014. Their drummer fell ill in 2018, the band went on hiatus. They did try to make a comeback in 2018 with drummer Ryohei, but unfortunately did not make it through the pandemic. The group went on an indefinite hiatus as of May 20th 2020. Yoshiatsu made a final announcement disbanding the group on December 27, 2021. While they do have an official YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@dadaroma1869/videos ) this full MV can not be found there and must be watched here: “ファン眠花”. I find this to be quite interesting as Americans will debate for hours in a comment section about which genre box to put a band in. I think this is why we see and hear so much “genre flipping” in Japanese music. While “having a discussion about music” is important, simply enjoying music for what it is, is most valuable 😉 . Final Line-Up Yoshiatsu (Vocalist) Takashi (Guitarist) Tomo (Bassist) Ryohei (Drummer) Former drummer (2014 – 2018) for the band, Yusuke, retired completely from music for health reasons (dystonia). https://www.dadaroma.com/ (inactive but still available)
