BAND-MAID - Chemical Reaction (2-way reaction)

I might need to take back what I said last week.

Chemical Reaction is...it's pure gold, guys...! The overall loud level and the crunchiness of the guitars, epic bass lines and that well known drum part...

This made me feel like I was listening to a "lighter" version of Rammstein's "Du Hast," which is the only song I know from them.

Anyway, this was a fun song to listen to as well as watch the magic happen in the score!

MISA MISA MISA!!!!! Absolutely LOVE this song, it to me is just a straight ahead ROCKER

David Cook

This…is how you do this right. I love that you explained your reasoning why you don’t particularly like this song. …and no one should fight here anyway. Everyone should have their own opinion on music! It’s a personal thing. πŸ₯°

It is actually one of my least favourite tracks of the Unseen World album. I like the guitar parts and the overall vibe (and I don't mind the cowbell), but I find the chorus to be somewhat whiny. I don't think it is bad or anything like that, but it might be in my lower half of Band-Maid tracks. I also know there is at least one reactor who really dislikes this track, although it is tough to tell how much of a meme it has become on the Gaijin Guys (he is part of that group) and how true it is. He certainly didn't like it when he first checked it out. Anyway, I absolutely don't feel the need to fight anyone over liking a track or not, I can see why some people love it for sure. I just don't like whiny vocals (I know that's subjective). Daydreaming is a good example of a Band-Maid track that even more fans love (including you) and that just doesn't do it for me because of what I consider whiny vocals. It's just a taste thing, what can I say. I have seen people compare Daydreaming to a U2 song and that checks out, I find the tracks I have heard by them also very whiny.

NittPicc, lady you slayed me with your comments. Strip to Chemical Reaction - haha. Love it. Again you, like our Maids, are very cute and funny - and love you for it. Of course, along with your intelligent and informative comments.

There are a few songs from the Unseen World album which they avoid at the live shows. Giovanni is another one. Although the reasons are different, I guess. Giovanni is too complicated to fit well into a live performance. And CHEMICAL REACTION requires a cowbell or a trigger pad, it's an extra equipment Akane does not like so much.

On the Day of Maid live you spoke of, Kanami had problems with her wireless signal, and she dropped out of the mix entirely several times during the performance. Thankfully not during her solo.

Bill Whitaker

Some samples from the lyrics... "Darling Teach me about painful things When you pick it up and "The END" Good medicine tastes bitter It serves you right" "It's not got cold yet. Come on, right, get down on your knees You have no choice Serve me, love me, give me all."

Bandmaidfanatl

On "what does this remind you of," the chants are very Bon Jovi. In fact, a lot of CR reminds me of "Lay Your Hands On Me." 🎠

Bandmaidfanatl

On the cowbell, it is very difficult to tell, but in the video of the 2021 DoM, they are very sneaky about not showing Akane during any of the cowbell bits. But toward the end, she appears to be hitting it on her far right. You can't really see it when they focus on her drumkit. I will say that I have never seen her kit on any US lives with a cowbell. Not sure about the second live last August. Although, I think it would be fantastic if Miku had cowbell duty.

Bandmaidfanatl

Leave it to Band-Maid to write a great "live" song and only have played it live twice.

Bandmaidfanatl

After Moratorium, there should not be a question of Band-Maid's ability to fit into harder songs, and Chemical Reaction proves it! The Chemical Reaction? The release of endorphins during the song, I think, Po!!

I've long been trying to understand the reasons why they do not play this song live very often. As a matter of fact, if I had been in charge, they would have made an MV for this song, which I think would have been very very popular in the west. Also, like a turkey's neck in hunting season, no part of Kanami's guitar neck is safe from Mincho. I think Miku is agreeing with you about the song in this last verse: CHEMICAL REACTION It's not got cold yet. Come on, right, get down on your knees You have no choice. Serve me, love me, give me all.

Glenner7

To me that "Hey!" part reminds of AC/DC "For those about to rock/We salute you!" and then the cannon fires.

Vladimir Chupin

This was when the pandemic was going and Miku really upped her playing to Kanami's delight! Can you imagine the Kanami/Miku sessions during that time, no touring to interfere with the lessons, just wow! I'm sure Kanami was going nuts, composing without interruption at this time! This one of my favorite songs from these amazing ladies! Kanami also said she worked on her hand and finger speed during this time also, which she considered slow before this, like really Kanami?

Wayne B

This was Kanami's homage and throwback song to the rock music of the 70's (complete with cowbell). The bass and drums by the "Thunder Buddies" gives the song that driving heavy rock beat from back then. (I know, I lived the music at that time). IMO, the title of the song alluded to the mantra and culture of the 70's (Sex, drugs, rock and roll, each from or forming a chemical reaction). The trilling "Purple Haze, or "Foxy Lady" outre of the song may be an homage to the person considered the greatest rock guitarist of all time - Jimi Hendrix.

No!, the intro of Alone was in december 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrZHCTteRDA

The only way to listen to Chemical Reaction live is through a recording of the online Okyuji from May 2021, in the middle of the pandemic. I'm not sure but I think that performance included the best intro of the song Alone of all time with MISA doing tricks with her bass. I'll leave you a link here to satisfy your curiosity as a small, unspeakable and personal sin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w9c5IKqr5M By the way, Akane had to buy a cowbell specifically for this song at the request of its composer...

Juan San

Glad Kanami stuck to her guns and insisted that Akane use the cow bell for this song! The only song, so far, that Akane has used one to my knowledge, hope for more in the future! Always room for more cow bell, Po!

Wayne B

LOL! I agree NittPicc!~ If you don't like this song, I'm not sure we can be friends. 🀣🀣 This is just pure uncut hard rock badassery po! The Flappy Pigeon was roaring!

Charles Coleman

Kanami: "I got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbelll!"🀘🀘

Juan San

🀣🀣🀣 NiitPicc we love you!!! This has got to be the most fun you have had doing a reaction! No need to hold back, you are among friends Po! Love it! I hadn't thought about this as a stripper song, but now mentioned, there's no denying it! Make it rain!!!!! This song is such a killer! Many times it takes a while for someone to warm up to a song, even a great song. But this is not that. The very first time I heard this after buying the CD, I absolutely loved it! No warm-up period necessary!~ It is much loved by the Band Maid community and we all wish they would play it more live - maybe next year? Fingers crossed! I know Miss NittPicc is enjoying herself when the potty mouth shows up, LOL!! Don't worry, we don't mind a bit! I still think this would be a great intro song for the next Godzilla movie. The song starts amongst the thick fog and mist as Godzilla suddenly emerges out of the haze, stomping his way to go destroy the city!

Charles Coleman

Depending on our age we having different references, Chemical reaction screamed Deep Purple/Atomic Rooster mashup to me from the early 70s, cowbell and all. The other thing is the intro that you sang along to and described as pentatonic immediately made me think of 1967 Psychedelia and I knew I'd heard something very similar from around that time. After quite a bit of delving it turned out to be the 2 songs, Paradise Lost and From The Underworld that I was thinking of by The Herd (Peter Frampton), it's a slower tempo than Kanami and she extends it but it's very similar to me anyway. In any event I love this song.

Two recordings of the live performances of CHEMICAL REACTION were released: BAND-MAID - [THE DAY OF MAID 2021 - #11] CHEMICAL REACTION BAND-MAID - [η•ͺε€–η·¨γŠη΅¦δ»• Medium in Summer 2024, August 30 - #19] CHEMICAL REACTION

Bruce Dickinson would be satisfied, I think.

Bandmaidfanatl

β€” Also, you use a cowbell in CHEMICAL REACTION, which I think is rare. Akane: The demo already had the cowbell sound, and I thought I could use the bell of the ride cymbal instead, but when I talked about that with Kanami, she said β€œI want you to play the cowbell in this song”, so I decided to use it. I hit it having the ’80s image in my mind. Also, I emphasized accurate rhythm timing so far, but I tried to break it a little in Why Why Why, giving it a session-like feel. I hope I can express the freedom of drumming at servings. https://www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/lwwqpf/interview_with_bandmaid_on_musicvoice_on_20210122/

Spring came far too early this year: May flowers blooming in February. Should I be sad for the month, or glad for the sky? The birds don't know which way to sing and, my friend, neither do I. Two days ago, a girl I truly thought I loved suddenly didn't seem to matter at all. Should I sing sad farewell to things I'm really glad I've left behind? The birds don't know which way to sing and, my friend, neither do I. In another day, heavy snow will lie upon the ground and buds prematurely bloomed shall fail; and every creature living now, then will surely die... The birds don't know which way to sing and, my friend, neither do I. The birds don't know if it's time yet to fly; they don't know which way to go and, my friend, neither do I. Peter Hammill, The Birds (Wonderful song, by the way. Robert Fripp on guitar is amazing).
