BAND-MAID - 本懐 (Honkai)

misa, Misa, MISA!

...and Akane...

...and Miku, Kanami and Saiki, of course...

But this one really is all bout Misa and Akane for me. Lol.

Those half-times they have are fascinating, because often they simultaneously feel faster than the normal pace. I'm not sure how they manage to create this feeling... but it's awesome. :)

I discovered recently that CONQUEROR on Spotify seems to be an improved remix. I'm not sure about it, but it sounds better there then it was on the CD. I checked the waveforms in Audition, and there is the same clipping. I don't know what's happening, but when I played it from Spotify recently, I suddenly was surprised how good it sounds. Before it was like through a mattress, and now I can hear MISA's punchy bass, and Akane's cymbals actually ring, and don't sound like radio static.

Vladimir Chupin

I remember when they had a Listen-Together Party on Twitter, I wrote the same to Miku. "No, Miku, I will never forget you!" 🕊️😍

Vladimir Chupin

I did already 😊 https://1drv.ms/v/s!AlMGoXSGX5qdrIIqVWMl3laWvOwXBQ?e=7wmjcX

Vladimir Chupin

Oh! I hope the Maids hear you. I would love to see them announcing they have decided to play funk jazz from April 1st and releasing an album as a FUNK-MAID band...

Vladimir Chupin

Also, I think it's "ambition" in the sense Japanese people use it, for example, for the New Year wishes—they call them "ambitions." Like, Akane's ambition for 2020, if I remember correctly, was "to go to bed before 1am" 😊

Vladimir Chupin

Thanks for reminding me about it! In this one you can see Miku coming and pretending she shouts "You will forget about me someday." There is another version, [Self-cover] AKANE "本懐" (Pull Angle ver) 2021.12.09 https://bandmaidprime.tokyo/movies/65619 where she Akane looks up and straight and makes a little dance at this moment. That one is hilarious.

Vladimir Chupin

Not the pedal, as far as I can see. MISA is standing on the platform all this time, away from her pedalboard. I think it's just an effect. But sounds similar to wah-wah pedal, yes.

Vladimir Chupin

Exactly! I was afraid no one else would notice that.

Juan San

The 1st spin-off was really good, both live at the venue and the stream they did. Probably the best mix I've heard on a recorded concert by them.

Loved your reaction and analysis, one of the surprises on Unseen World. I just noticed something that was bouncing around in my head every since I first heart "Forbidden Tales" and it finally clicked - if you listen to the ending of Honkai starting at 2:40 and FT at 3:52, they both have this epic feeling and soaring harmonies that are very similar in feel. Anyway, thanks for the extended reaction. And we will never forget about the pigeon and her merry band of minstrels.

Glen Kelley

That's a wah wah pedal

Jonas

Funky Honkai! NittPicc, you nailed with Funkadelic Maids. I would pay boucoup for that album. From the beginning I have called MISA the "Japanese Soul Sister".

Bill Hallisey

This song on its own is fantastic. Add the “Thunder Buddies” and with MISA getting funky - wow! Band-Maid, I guess, has to remind us that they are not bound by genres - they ARE the GENRE ‘BAND-MAID’. Let me also agree with Juan San that MISA and Akane share the podium with the best rhythm sections in rock history.

Rebecca Haigh

Great reaction! Love this song - always have. So many cool things. The live intro is killer, as they always are! I really enjoy watching the Akane GoPro self cover of this song on Band-Maid Prime (makes me laugh every time) https://bandmaidprime.tokyo/movies/64880

Glenner7

Was this the free stream they offered to their fan club members because they had so many no shows due to the typhoon? That was very cool of them to do that.

Charles Coleman

Just 2 more things. Misa definitely loves her some Funk! And has anyone ever seen someone have so much fun playing an instrument as Akane on the drums?

Charles Coleman

Yes. I can't remember the names, but you are right.

Charles Coleman

"Honkai" translates as "ambition" BTW, IDK WTF Google translate is talking about. 🤣

Lord Vorador

The spin off live okyu-ji was only available when it was streamed, & has not been released on Blu-ray or BAND-MAID PRIME. TECHNICALLY it isn't content behind a paywall anymore, so you didn't break your rule... your off the hook on a legal "grey area" loophole. 😜

Lord Vorador

This is one of my favorite BAND-MAID songs, I've absolutely loved it from the first time I heard it! ...BTW, MISA's "nasal" tone during the spin off intro is produced by an effect pedal she has on her pedal board called an envelope filter. It basically functions as an automatic wah-wah pedal for bass.

Lord Vorador

Maybe this year's April Fools day we will see a new band called Band-Funky-Maids that play funk covers of Band-Maid songs...

Eno L

Someone needs to clip NittPicc doing the drums with her voice! LOL! She has so much fun doing these reactions!

Charles Coleman

Every time Miku says "you will forget about me someday" I always answer back, no chance, Miku, there is NO chance we'll ever forget you Po!

Charles Coleman

This is one of those songs that requires no "warming up to" period. I loved this one right out of the box! This whole album cranks it to 11 from start to finish, which is a departure from the previous album Conqueror, which was a bit more subtle. It took me a while to warm up to Conqueror (except for "Flying High") as it was a bit more laid back than previous albums, at least be Band Maid standards. I have since not only warmed up to it, but I really love and appreciate it now. But Unseen World was Band Maid reasserting themselves with authority and this is definitely in my top 5 on a killer album!

Charles Coleman

Probably my favorite UW song, that four-part bridge is a gem and Saiki's last verse over Miku's angelic choir... thrilling! The girls don't spare a single detail in the songs (bells, clocks, horns or violins...) but for me certain arrangements can only be heard in these instrumentals, it's impossible to discern them with all the vocal layers on top. In my humble opinion MISA and Akane share the podium with the best rhythm sections in the history of rock Geddy Lee - Neil Peart, John Paul Jones - John Bonham, John Entwistle - Keith Moon... MISA played in a couple of bands before... but to find out more I'll let you watch Ohrenje's documentary... BTW: as far as I'm concerned you can break the rules as often as you want, this is an environment among friends

Juan San

Great reaction! That live video was awesome! Check out MISA's Instagram. She plays her bass on there. ❤️😊

Onyx The Dane

Misa + Akane = Thunder Buddies. I sent the live version to my best friend, I was all Misa, Misa, Misa, his response was that drummer! Akane's smile while jamming with Misa is awesome. I am glad you decided to "break your own rule", the intro was worth that. On a side note, I hope you do the documentary of the 10th anniversary show.

David Cousins

The two are best rhythm section ever but they play as leads so much the term doesn't do them justice.

Msquare

Misa may have stank face but Akane always smiled 😃

Msquare

MISA was in a couple of bands before Band-Maid. I think she was in a Smashing Pumpkins cover band.
