BAND-MAID - BLACK HOLE (3-way listen reaction)

I forgot that I would receive a full firing squad to the ears in this song.

Akane surely spontaneously combusted during the first performance of this song. Maybe she goes super saiyan?

A song that doesn't feel like it should be able to stay together shouldn't be this good, but it is.

This track was so much fun to pull apart and see all it's working parts. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I wish I could find it now, but when I was in chorus my senior year in high school, we did a set of songs about space. I remember it was just like this, very experimental. One song was called Solar Wind, but I can’t remember any of the other ones. I just remember them being all over the place.

Lol! Playing it can sometimes feel like one.

I feel bad that I think I should know what these are and more than likely I have been sent it before and I just forgot… 👉🏼👈🏼

It’s eye and ear opening! There are so many more musical and technical things happening when I get my hands on that score. It’s eye candy. It always makes me feel so silly that I can’t hear everything the first time around. 😅

I always find amusing your reading of the score and instrumental. Band-Maid songs have this duplicity for which you can listen to the official version and get an impression, and then to the instrumental and have another you didn't even expect. Because i used to listen to a lot of classical music, as a teenager, i really enjoy this side of Band-Maid as well as your analysys... Thank you NittPicc

You should react all the Maid Waltz

Akane described this as "hell" level when working with Kanomi.

Hemiola sounds like a blood disease!

Unseen World remains for me, as I often say, a masterpiece. As to the order of creation, here's yet another source you can look up to get it straight from the horse lover's mouth. Miku on Twitter, Jan 20, 2021: BLACK HOLE I have done a lot of research and reading about black holes. When I heard this song, I thought "BLACK HOLE! I was like, "What the hell is this? #bandmaid #BMUWLP I think it would be very very cool to know what Kanami called her demo of this... I also have a theory, that they update the instrumental parts as the song progresses through addition of the lyrics. My favourite example is in Endless Story, where as the lyrics go "Spinning dizzy, love swirls around", at the same time, MISA's playing a repeated swirling pattern of bass notes. Miku could have based her lyrics on this feel, but I think it was the other way around..

Translation from t-shinji in Reddit: Kobato: Right, po. But I think it’s more difficult to write lyrics first, po, because I write them with images I get from songs. My writing style is usually to get inspirations and gather information from the vibe of a song, like “I want to write something about revenge to this song, so I’ll see such movies on dark relationships”, so the other way around is a little… — I see, you have to create images by yourself then. Kobato: I think it’s easier for lyricists who write about their own feelings, but it will be difficult for me Kobato, as I don’t write about myself and I write and build up stories with images I get from songs rather than my feelings, po. Interview with Miku Kobato and Kanami on the May 2021 issue of Player (2021-04-02): The two guitarists:

I love Maid Waltz, the intro they compose every season to start their concerts. They should release an EP with them! Akane couldn't have played this piece without getting injured without changing her drumming style. Her style is so smooth and flexible now that she can even start a concert with Black Hole and not be exhausted for the rest. Kanami has often said that they compose with live performances in mind, perhaps that's why their music is thoroughly enjoyable live. And finally... I was looking forward to seeing your face at the instrumental version, lol, because Black Hole is NOT the song you hear the first dozen times.

Juan San

I really like to follow you along the score 😊 Thanks again. Black Hole is a brain melter. It’s not just about the single elements, it’s how they all interweaves together which is mesmerizing and has more a classical or jazz than your usual rock band approach of composing IMHO. Kanami is an absolute fantastic composer - beside the fact that she’s also an insanely good, creative and underrated guitar player by some who might not really understand what she does. I guess Frank Zappa would have liked Kanami. And Sorry folks out there, but B-M released today „Zen“ and did prove again there is no other band like them and I also believe that not many out there would be capable of writing stuff like Black Hole, H-G-K and many more IMHO. They are a true Unicorn. And how Saiki and Miku are capable to sing over these musical hurricane and find fitting lyrics to it is a bit beyond my understanding 😊

Miku has said "always music first then lyrics" and that she doesn't think she could do it the other way. I have had a question in my mind regarding this for a while... is the stressless nature of the Japanese language a factor in this; being more to do with time rather than pitch and therefore, more rhythm than melody based? WIth stresed languages, I guess, it's more common to have lyrics first as the natural flow of phrases dictate the melody to a large degree (think "happy birthday to you"). Once B-M have a vocal melody, is it just fitting in the right number of syllables for them!? Also is this also why Saiki is so good at rap/hiphop/patter!?

Chalfo

I forgot they opened the show with this. Talk about hit the ground running! Rock on sisters Po!!!!!

Charles Coleman

In the live version, this is the beginning of the show. This is the music that is played when they individually come onto the stage. The music is usually referred to as The Maid Waltz, and is also composed by Kanami and performed by Band-Maid. There have been different versions throughout the years.

What a way to spend a Sunday morning, I watched the debut MV for Zen and then this :). Even though I can't read music I appreciate how you explain things so a layman can understand it somewhat. Always look forward to Sundays, thanks again.

David Cousins

Kanami writes the song first and then Miku or Saiki, sometimes both, do the lyrics based on the feelings they get listening to the song. Not sure if they've ever done lyrics first, but if so it would be a rare occurrence.

Devyiant

If "Black Hole" was the first song on their set list during that concert, how worn out was Akane at the end?!!!!!

Bill Hallisey

How Saiki and Miku could hold the vocal melody through that is beyond me!
