Bocchi the Rock, Ep. 3 - Be Right There

Kita-san didn't know how to play guitar this whole time!

I know it's only episode three, but I seriously was thinking that there was another reason she refused to join a band. I do feel silly that I didn't think that it was Kessoku Band she left!

I am loving this anime. Thank you guys for telling me about this!

As Joe Kuan has already pointed toward, BAKWIMPS being discussed by Bocchi's classmates is a reference to the group RADWIMPS. Over the last decade they've become known shifting more towards 'anthemic' type music having worked with Makoto Shinkai since 2016 doing the soundtracks for the anime movies 'Your Name', 'Weathering With You' and 'Suzume'. So you might already know some of their music without being consciously aware of them. They've actually been a band since early high school, forming in 2001 and debuting independently with their first album in 2003. Their earlier material was more high energy alt-rock, with possibly my favourite release of theirs being their 5th album, 'Altocolony no Teiri' from 2009. Aside from that obvious reference, there are quite a few other more subtle real life band references in this episode in background posters at Starry. I'll only comment on a couple of the ones I'm fairly certain about. When they're watching Kita sweeping in her maid outfit, above the bar on the left there's a poster for Champ of Human, which is meant to be Bump of Chicken (similar band to Radwimps who've done an OP for Spy x Family). When Kita is talking about idolising Ryo, there's a poster behind Kita & Bocchi for U's which is referencing the vocal/guitar duo B'z, who have been active since 1988 and are one of the most commercially successful j-rock groups who have more of a classic rock kinda energy.

Same! I imagine a lot feel this way. And I honestly get Bocchi’s thought process. I know that with fame comes good and bad things, but I feel like for introverts who have a hard time making friends (me…) it could possibly be a blessing…or a curse? 🤷‍♀️

I need to check them out then!

NittPicc

Right?!? That’s what I thought. Lol

I really liked the mixed media in this episode. It’s honestly refreshing to see. I can’t wait for more!

It’s on my list to react to when I record sometime this weekend! I cannot wait! I’ve heard so many good things. 🥳

Hola . Asterism just dropped a collab video with the Indian band Pineapple Express called Metal Gandhara . Hal Ca has been working on her singing skills and it really shows . You will love this song I guarantee you will lose your mind over this song .

This anime is a masterpiece of multimedia. They use every media format and styles , including real footage, to convey Bocchi's mental state. You will see.

Love your Kanami keychain. BAKWIMPS they refers to I think it's RADWIMPS. This band has many great songs!

Joe Kuan

Sorry, meant Ryo-san!

Sen-Pai eating weeds is something MISA would do.

I wonder how many female Japanese J-Rock artists identify with Bocchi.

You're right to assume a loose Band-Maid connection I think. The Mangaka (writer of the manga) does definitely know who they are. In the manga every chapter starts with Kessoku Band recreating a famous Japanese artists album cover or scene from a music video. And for chapter 19 or 20 I believe they are recreating a scene from the Domination music video with Bocchi on top of the table ripping the solo as the others sit around her. Also you are gonna hear a song eventually and definitely think, "oh this could totally be a Band-Maid song.", but not for a while.
