BAND-MAID - Cross (two way comparison)

The modulations that I hear via key is really what brings this song to life!

The pure talent it takes for Saiki and Miku to be able to know what to listen for to modulate their voices to the next key is crazy. That's never easy! Just ask a vocalist!

After previous reactions I have done this past weekends on YouTube and Patreon, I was a little hesitant to say that they wrote this song, but it sounds like their kind of work. Please let me know down below if this is or isn't true!

Anyway, I loved this. The clever use of key modulations and the mixture of Saiki and Miku's voice really made this special. Obviously, this group in general, is something else!

MISA MISA MISA!!!!!

Kanami mentioned, during an interview, that she has asked that her guitar be kept in the background. Kanami does not want to be the focus of the music but to allow the other instruments to ‘shine’ also. Kanami, what a kind hearted humble person (as are all of Band-Maid).

We can never congratulate the musicians enough for their talent, but I really want to focus on Saiki here. Other than her ability to manage her pitch, she has so much stamina and breath control that it becomes unfair. This song feels like a huge sprint and she keeps the pace while giving us so many words that we wonder where she's breathing.

I agree the recorded version needs more Kanami. Maybe this has something to do with being on a smaller label in the early years. Because the most recent recordings are much better. Also, you mentioned you never heard Kanami sing until you heard the Puzzle acoustic version. She does sing backup on songs when they need more power in the choruses. This is one of those songs, the camera catches Kanami singing in the live video.

I personally sent her your songlist ;) .

I will say that the live recordings of Warning,Dice and Different on their channel aren't as good as the studio versions IMO. Dice in particular doesn't have the punch (ironically Kanami's guitar). These live versions were during their online shows during the pandemic and the mix seems a bit off although they do have a raw sound to them. Having said that recent recorded lives of these songs from their recent shows are great (they aren't on their YT channel, however)

Glad you enjoyed! It's a catchy song that keeps your interest throughout with all the changes. The studio vs live is a good comparison for the vocals on the studio and the better instrumental mix for the live - I believe this may have been around the surgery part of Saiki's career, which is obvious a song like this must have been difficult for her during this time, but she did a great job and Miku kicked it up a lot to help. This is just a very intriguing song and very active.

Dear NittPicc, If you need information about the BAND-MAID songs, go to the sub-Reddit at https://www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/ and see the link "Database" on the right. Excellent. This song has always seemed to me like a monster trying to capture Saiki, who runs just one small step ahead. Our Princess has lungs. I leave you below an interesting Reddit thread (from the indispensable t-shinji) with an analysis of Band Maid's songs in relation to their difficulty in singing them in Karaoke. Cross has an important 8 in vocal range, speed and word length. You need to breathe very well to modulate those phrases without almost a break. https://www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/inmobx/vocal_difficulty_ratings_of_bandmaid_songs_by/?rdt=55891

Mincho's superpower is what she plays behind the vocals. It's always intricate without being overbearing, and a moment later, it can move effortlessly to the front and leave you in shock, only to move back to behind the vocals. Asking the age old Mincho question, "WTF did she just do???"

You are not crazy about the studio versions. It is a common complaint (and there aren't many complaints about this band) that the mix on their recordings aren't always as good as they could be and Kanami's guitar parts often suffer because of that. But despite this, their music and their skill manages to overcome this one weakness.
