The Warning - Narcisista

This was a cool experience to see Pau sing and play at the same time. I was super excited to hear them sing in Spanish as well. The context of the song is not a happy one though. They are talking about something they have experienced before and I've been there too.

If you want to learn more about La Malinche, here's a cool animation about it:

LYRICS Translated (Spanish in parenthesis:

They say you have to pray for me
(Dicen que hay que rezar por mí)

so worried
(Tan preocupados)

But, I don't see that they are praying so much
(Pero, no veo que estén rezando tanto)

It's not a big deal, leave your judgments now
(No es para tanto, dejen ya sus juicios)

Stay away from me please
(Aléjense de mí, por favor)

Criticize me a little more
(Critíquenme un poco más)

I find myself entertained when listening
(Me encuentro entretenida al escuchar)

Everything they say, everything they curse
(Todo lo que dicen, lo que maldicen)

Let me laugh some more
(Déjenme reírme un poco más)

Because you, you don't know anything
(Porque tú, no sabes nada)

You spread the word and you don't shut up
(Corres la voz y no te callas)

I cover my ears and just say
(Me tapo los oídos y simplemente digo)

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

Let me deny the list, I'm not crazy or a malinchista
(Déjenme negar la lista, no soy loca ni malinchista)

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

They say I'm selfish, damned narcissist
(Dicen que soy egoísta, condenada narcisista)

I don't know what to do anymore
(Ya no sé que hacer)

I don't see the point in pretending
(No le veo el punto a pretender)

I don't try anymore, because I already know
(No intento más, porque yo ya sé)

Behind the curtains, they keep talking!
(¡Que atrás de las cortinas, ellos siguen hablando!)

Your good intentions always come out on top!
(¡Sus buenas intenciones siempre salen sobrando!)

Don't think you're fooling me with that disguise
(No creas que me engañas con ese disfraz)

Because you, you don't know anything
(Porque tú, no sabes nada)

You spread the word and you don't shut up
Corres la voz y no te callas)

I cover my ears and simply say
(Me tapo los oídos y simplemente, digo)

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

Let me deny the list, I'm not crazy or a malinchista
(Déjenme negar la lista, no soy loca ni malinchista)

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

They say I'm selfish, damned narcissist
(Dicen que soy egoísta, condenada narcisista)

Na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na

Na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na

I will deny the list again
(Volveré a negar la lista)

I'm not crazy or malinchista
(No soy loca ni malinchista)

Na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na

Na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na

They say I'm selfish, damned narcissist
(Dicen que soy egoísta, condenada narcisista)

The Warning - Narcisista

Comments

Ale Ale Ale! This is my Favourite Warning song (from the ones I have heard).

David Cook

Lo que más me gusta de esta canción es que la hayan escrito en español. Es un idioma que imprime bastante dureza a las palabras, y en este caso va como anillo al dedo.

Juan San

Yes! I loved that performance too! That whole Teatro Metropolitan CDMX concert was awesome!

A wonderful way to deal with critics. Very much a middle finger to their naysayers. Of performances of this song, the one from Teatro Metropolitan CDMX is fantastic, for Pau steps out from behind the kit to perform it. Her drum teacher takes over for her. Of their Spanish songs, "Martirio" is my favorite, and very likely my favorite song from them overall. The music video is stunning, both visually and musically, but the Teatro Metropolitan live is also impactful.

Robert Herring

This is a cool song dealing with a touchy subject. It's a shame they have to deal with such negativity over such a trivial issue. But I think with this song, they are handling it in the best way possible. Good for them!

Charles Coleman

Apparently Otoboke Beaver got some of that from the Japanese crowd since they signed to a British label and might be as popular in the West (if not more) than in Japan + them adding English in their lyrics as well. They also wrote a response track, (titled Pardon?), but that was apparently because people complained about their Engiish pronunciation for some reason, so they basically get fire from both sides. It doesn't make a lot of sense in my opinion, but they are also a band that will use that energy as fuel to make music. Yes, I sometimes feel bands "sell out" when they are trying to write songs that might cater more to mainstream audiences (like with Asterism when they started to incorporate vocals) and while I might "complain" about that, it's ultimately their decision. Bands shouldn't care what their fans think, they should make the music they want to make imo, but ultimately it's their livelyhood so they obviously should also think about themselves.

The first video I watched was Dust to Dust live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX where Pau sings, which was fantastic! I just saw them last night in Baltimore! Incredible show! 🤩

This song, evidently, is their response to the haters for "selling out" to English. Even The Beatles got this criticism when they went to America from Brits. I am sure Band-Maid gets this a bit in Japan.

Of their songs in Spanish, I like Martirio and Qué Más Quieres more. Especially Martirio hits me hard. The crowd participation is strong in this one, though ;) hehe
