Tokyo Jihen & ADO - Crime and Punishment

Any opportunity to listen to and react to Tokyo Jihen is a great day to be alive. Add ADO into that cocktail and I have an amazing musical drink!

This was a fun reaction. I had no idea that ADO did a cover of "Crime and Punishment." Since ADO's voice has many abilities to morph and change, this was a perfect song for her to perform. I loved her version.

Of course I can't leave here without talking about Sheena. Her stage presence was something to behold. I am not sure of the context of the song, but I could see by her body lnaguage and the hurt in her voice that there is something deeply emotional going on in here.

I cannot look past the band either. The wind section, our guitarist, bassist and keys were creating such a noir style sound that really made the moment special.

Just absolutely incredible!

Hi Nittpicc, nice reaction as always. Try listening to original studio version of Sheena Ringo or the original MV which are closer to ADO's version (very impressive by the way). The outro for the studio version (if i remember correctly) has that 'tasty thing' you were looking for in ADO's... I stumbled on Sheena Ringo couple months ago ( a pause from BandMaid..) and i came to understand Miku's concept of 'cool music'; glad on the influence she had on last ten years generation of (females? probably also males) artists in Japan we are listening today..

And after having checked with my VPN to find the official upload is blocked in the US, here's a version of the MV that's not region locked: https://youtu.be/z-McBiWjrX8?si=CdgdiFRZzDPMaqLb

and as a little bonus, though you haven't gotten to it yet. Sheena was a huge influence to Miku from Band-Maid. Arguably the one singer who pushed Miku in the direction she ended up taking and thank heavens for that

The lyrics (I guess approximately): Yamanote Street in the morning, cold enough that stings your cheeks I throw away an empty pack of cigarettes Today, once again, I have no place to be my small room spoils the loneliness Don't fall for this haunting cry Don't look to the future, only to the certainty of the present Call my name right, touch my body All I need is this. Alone, I screamed "I love you." I fumbled around through the night streets, without success. The cheap fluorescent lamps at the ticket gate aren't even enough to cast my shadow Even these distorted, uncertain, distant days Have a smell of Seven Star That awakens a season that evokes the same as the others The very thing I wished for It´s going to go beyond contradiction And snatched even your voice, the thing I loved the most A german police car cars breaking the silence The siren makes a huge noise, the real world is drifting Don't fall for this haunting cry Don't look to the future, only to the present you can be sure of. Call my name right, touch my body. I need only this... recognize me. Don't fall for this haunting cry Don't fall for this haunting cry Call my name, touch my body All I need is this. Yamanote Street in the morning, cold enough that stings your cheeks I throw away my empty pack of cigarettes Today, once again, I have no place to be my small room spoils the loneliness. The original MV create a nice complement to these lyrics. It's worth checking out.

Crime and Punishment (Tsumi to Batsu) belongs to Shōso Strip, the second Ringo´s LP released in 2000 (produced by Seiji Kameda, bassist of Tokyo Jihen) and one of the most important rock albums in Japan, absolutely seminal for what would dawn in the new century. That LP is on both Rolling Stone Japan lists, the 100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums of All Time and the Best-selling album of All Time. The album contains the songs Tsumi to Batsu, Gips, Bathroom, Instinct or I´m a liar, for me authentic masterpieces of modern rock music, which have been covered by countless musicians in Japan. Sheena's live versions are absolutely captivating and always different from each other. Ado's version is probably the most emotional of all those I have heard, the most impressive for sure, and it must not be easy to cover an icon of the national music of your country.

The original version from Shiina's second solo album back in 2000: https://youtu.be/dSXvVmwJxh4?si=rNs0A36bg-d0lcHs

As I posted when you first announced this weekend's videos, this version of Crime & Punishment isn't Tokyo Jihen, it's Shiina Ringo's solo work with a different backing band. Moreso it's a version done 15yrs after she first released it, in a rather different arrangement. Ado is on record as being a massive Shiina fan and has actually worked with her, the comparison will only make sense fully if you also check out the original Ringo MV, as her version is much closer to how Shiina originally performed it.
