BAND-MAID - Manners (SURPRISE 3-way comparison)

I feel like I could possibly be boring you guys with the score study of their songs, but I want you to understand that this is so interesting to me to see the music go by and listen to it at the same time.

I also think I could so some cool projects with this some time soon while these are in my possesion for now. Thanks again Destiny!

Also, I did some research before I recorded and found that there was a Christmas acoustic version of this with Saiki and Kanami...so...I added that too. I hope you don't mind!

Perfect! Thank for this!

Just yesterday I left a comment on a reaction by Ohrenje and Ryan Mear to Forbidden Tale and said it made me think that Band-Maid should soon be taking the stage with a backing orchestra (arranged by Kanami of course). Then, here you are with the echo. Listen to Forbidden Tale and see if you think it is a good candidate for such a presentation. Your 3-way analysis of Manners was mind-expanding. Thanks.

I tried reversing it and didn't hear anything. I'll see if I still have it.

Oh, that's an interesting note, that it's a three-part album, Roots, Progress, and Unleash! I would only add Hibana here, it definitely belongs to the same group.

Glad you're enjoying the score and the instrumentals! 😊🤍 Happy to help and always enjoy the walk through each song with you! This gave me a much needed break and some fun this evening 🤍

Also, the final part in the instrumental Manners seems to be a track playing backwards. I keep reminding myself that I should find a tool to play it backwards, to understand what Miku is singing there, and I always forget...

If you need the scans, I have scanned the whole book. The scans are separated into two folders: the interviews and the score. There are also PDF files, separately for the interviews and the score. I de-bound the book, to make sure the pages were flat when scanned. So, the quality is pretty high: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AlMGoXSGX5qdou8ma_QDFZTF8rwglg?e=iuwJCc

I always squeak trying to replicate that Miku part, while listening to Manners :)

I'm divided on their use of studio effects and backing tracks. Puzzle had synth lines that are a prominent part of the song. And that's fine. Obviously in a live setting they have to include that synth, so they have a backing track. The Band-Maiko stuff simply wouldn't exist without those Japanese instruments and chants being added in the studio, and if they ever play them live (I know, they did once) they have to add that stuff in. From Now On wouldn't feel the same without the strings and piano, although it could do without them. But sometimes the studio production feels distracting or unnecessary. The "phone alarm" sound effect in Corallium. The little synth arpeggio they use only once in Protect You. They're so obviously artificial and not part of rest of the composition that they take me out of the song. When I hear these live, it makes me wish they were generating all the music themselves. The horns in Manners fall in the second category for me. I understand they're filling space, but they appear nowhere else in the song and they don't need to be there. They're barely audible in the studio track, which just goes to show how superfluous they are.

When u do ah ah ah ah ah in acoustic version, if Miku see that she will say “nah nah nah, not for you. If some1 get to do, it’s ME 🐦PO’😏😁

aren't you inadvertently saying that the horns don't add anything (if you didn't know they were there)? In the Live they're more prominent and to me do nothing but alert the listener to the fact that there is a backing track. As I was saying (but lost interest because of some commenters) in a previous post ... I don't mind backing tracks as long as they are in the back. To me, they should ideally be almost (note: ideally and almost) impercievable. A good example of this is Secret My Lips where one effect synced with Akane'ss crash explodes us into the chorus... .only know that it's part of the backing track as it happens later on this time out-of-sync. As for what else is part of that backing track, I have absolutely no idea but whatever is helps the track feel huge.

The main riff of the song can probably be labelled as stoner rock, it wouldn't be strange to find it in a Queens of the Stone Age or Clutch song, but the girls manage to give it a very Band Maid-esque touch (more so than Dragon Cries, the other song it's often compared to). The song is on both sides of Unseen World (Roots and Progress) and they consider it to be a very core sound in their discography, the latter of which I found very striking given the progressive metal tendency of the rest of the album and of Unleash (over time I've come to consider that Unseen World is made up of three EPs, Roots, Progress and Unleash). The last seconds of the song are recorded backwards and in them a woman's voice (probably Miku) seems to sing "I was thinking about you". THank you NittPicc!!

NittPicc and anyone else, if you enjoyed the acoustic Manners, I highly encourage you to check out the whole show which is available on Band Maid Prime. But I especially encourage you to also watch the commentary versions (4 parts) of that same show. If you thought this video was cute, watch and listen to them talk over their own show commenting about it and laughing and poking fun at each other! LOL! It is a wonderful and funny look at their personalities and how they interact with each other. There is NO doubt that these 5 ladies are indeed good friends. And we get to find out what Kanami might have been in a previous life!
