Due to spring break spring cleaning, I'll keep this short...
I apologize to everyone that has asked, mentioned, or commented on me getting to this band. I have missed out on this group and I want to check out more. I would like to have a video for YouTube without a fear of getting it blocked. I have recieved suggestions already! So I will get on it.
I can see why they have a strong following!
Another of my favourite Japanese bands! They were my entry to J-Rock. Tomomi’s bass work on Shukan Sentimental instantly got my attention. https://youtu.be/HEkerSi5Fig?si=H3qSIis2RqZCnBBy OK, yeah, I’m a bassist and I notice the bass players first… 🤣. But its hard not to notice Tomomi dancing around when she plays… AMDKJ https://youtu.be/3pDpYur3Nwc?si=-YSXgfeHzYRGTzK or Suki Suki https://youtu.be/RCO03Ibb6lE?si=ihd4NTP7x6RquYuH or on an aggressive comp like Standard just having fun. https://youtu.be/DPPPw0AAtwk?si=CNSWuyddYKjkvprq. Or laying down a solid key change in Burn while Mami goes wild. https://youtu.be/PjVPqQcsvoc?si=yXi9nXPP188QLKLh or running all over the stage on Doll (one of her earliest hits and strangly one that doesn’t have to do with food) https://youtu.be/qWm5rpG-RYk?si=aswQ1fU7lsEnUvy3 or not able to move at the Red Bull studio but dancing in place with Hebun na Kibun https://youtu.be/IKwhHJpNxG4?si=fdPQtXK5BjRnBCOz

Some of this will be regurgitating what I'd already posted in the Discord with the recommendation, but I want to try and hit upon some things you brought up in the video as well.
The band consists of Haruna (36: primary vocals & rhythm guitar), Tomomi (34: bass & vocals), Mami (34: lead guitar, vocals) and Rina (33: drums, vocals & keys). I've given a short biography of the band in the Patreon only reaction suggestion channel on Discord.
In the earlier years the lead vocals were usually split between Haruna & Tomomi and harmonies from 3 or all 4 of them were extremely commonplace. Nowadays you get most lead vocals from Haruna with Mami often providing supportive type backing vocals, the team ToMami combined harmonies are still one of my favourite vocal blends though. Also there's a contingent amongst Scandal's western fans that refer to Tomo's high slightly nasal style of singing as her 'power squeak', meant in an endearing fashion (she adjusted around their 2nd & 3rd albums to accentuate this further within arrangements to contrast more with Haruna).
All four members do have songs where they take lead vocals, Rina the drummer has also become the primary lyricist over the last decade, so even when she's not officially singing, she will still mouth or sing along through her ambient drum microphones live in a lot of their material.
So 'Departure' from the album Hello World in 2014 is the 1st song with both lyrics & music written by Mami, you also have the strings which were arranged by Seiji Kameda (successful producer & Tokyo Jihen bassist).
Mami's guitar with the melted ice cream artwork is an American Fender fat strat with one-off graphics designed by a local artist she commissioned; amongst fans it's known as the original unofficial Mamicaster, she has also had an official signature Strat/Jaguar hybrid model by Squier and two quite different signature Fender Japan Strats released.
Tomomi is primarily playing bouncing octaves on the bass in the choruses, which is actually stylistically known as more of a disco/funk technique. The bassline for this song is deceptively tricky, with more fills & turnarounds than you might realise on first listen. Tomo also has a habit of playing countermelodies to her vocal lines on the bass whenever she's singing lead.
I've been meaning to learn the bass for this song all the way through for a number of years now. Here's a really good play-along video that clearly shows all the parts for the live version: https://youtu.be/PkuRCPgyN8g?si=ls3ElQwhJ3RvaT6Z

Scandal is one of my favorite "J-rock" groups. Some people may consider them a "soft" rock group. I consider their music as "melodic" rock. They have remained a staple in that scene for nearly two decades, which is a testament to not just their preserverance, but their appeal. If you need a song that can put you in a good mood, pull up nearly any Scandel song and it will get you that mood. After all, we all need that occasionally.

I think Scandal gets dismissed by fans sometimes because they fall between genres. Somewhere between pop and rock but never really displaying a preference for either ... as they do both so well. They are their own victim of being able to balance the genre difference and that is why so many fans love them, but are not rabid followers.
Shoutout to guitar_andy for suggesting this :) .

I also enjoyed this. Never listened to them even if i heard of them: I read somewhere they all can sing.

All four do lead vocals but Haruna (rhythm guitar) and Tomomi (bass) are definitely the two that do it the most.
I will be seeing them in June during their US tour. I had tickets to their last US tour but they had to cancel that one sadly.
