Let’s be vulnerable…!

This is me after a gym session.

It was upper body day, and as I’m doing lay pull-downs I could hear the gym radio play “Otherside” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Through each rep I thought to myself, “That bass line seems fairly simple. I bet I could do that.”

After finishing all my sets, I quickly went home and got to practicing.

Now…this is only the intro, but I plan on practicing the whole song in hopes to perform with the recording. It might be a while so don’t hold your breath, but I can now say that we’ve started the process.

…I have got a lot of work to do.

Note: The pick I’m using is one I got from the Hanbie concert. I don’t remember which band threw it to the audience, but I got one!

Thank you! 🙏 This felt like a full private lesson! 🥹 After this video, I tried anchoring my thumb on the pick-up and strings and plucking (if that’s what they call it since I’m not actually plucking…). It feels more comfortable. I feel like I’m struggling most with rattle sound when moving my fingers on the frets. That and finding a comfortable way to play in general. Guitar feels more natural and bass feels huge. 😅

If you're gonna play plectrum style, try picking closer to the pickup location, the string will have slightly less give (always more noticeable on longer scale lengths) and it tightens up the pitch wavering on the initial attack of the note. This is true for fingerstyle as well, but is more noticeable with a plectrum because of the brighter transients. There are tonal differences as well, but these are a gradual gradient, being most noticeable at the picking extremes, either right next to the bridge or where the neck joins the body. You are anchoring with the little finger of your picking hand against the highest string for hand placement/locating it would seem, this is something you can get away with more on guitar, with but the larger movements on bass it's introducing tension and stiffening your ability to be fluid. If you're playing fingerstyle then anchoring is far more common, where you'd rest your thumb on the edge of the pickup surround or the pickguard (depending on where you're striking the string) on the side (low E) closest to your body and then move it onto lower strings as you play the higher ones. This doesn't compromise your playing mechanics, assists efficiency of movement & helps control string noise, but isn't possible whilst holding a plectrum. For muting the rest of the fretting hand is just as important, rogue open strings vibrating can cause all kinda of unnecessary low end mud once you're playing through several hundred watts of amplification. With plectrum style the palm of your picking hand also makes a solid contribution to muting. The rhythm and accenting was already pretty solid though as expected, slight looseness in places more down to the co-ordination and concentration wavering with 'twiddly' bits. Was kinda fun to play along with what I remembered of the guitar part.

Damn Canadians need to watch shows in their own country ... I was at that concert and didn't get shit :p . Sometimes I will admit to sneaking over to Toronto to watch a band ... shhh ... don't tell. I would not want to get slapped with any tariffs for bringing joy back with me ;) .

Very cool that you got a pic at the Hanabie show! I was very lucky to get a Misa pic in Philly 2022. It's the only pic I've ever gotten. A Canadian friend of mine - Scott - got a Mincho Pic in Detroit in 2023.
