Sound! Euphonium, S.1, Ep. 10 - Straight Trumpet

This episode go tme straight HEATED!

A good teacher is understanding and will listen to their students even if it is hard at first to hear what they have to say.

While I don't think the students should have used the fact that Reina knew the director previously as an excuse for how the auditions came out, I find it admirable that he decided to hold re-auditions for the solo trumpet spot. He saw that there was an issue and he decided to open the conversation. I love that.

I causally throw out the name of this anime to my students. I have a lot of them who already watch a lot of anime in general. I actually might just put a poster up in my room so they get curious. Lol.

Oooo. I didn’t even think of the level of teaching that Taki-sensei has. Honestly…that’s the worst part about teaching: being a 1st year or “only a few years in” teacher. Especially in music. You can learn everything you need to know in paper and books in college, but you learn by doing with music. 12 years in for me and I still feel like I know so much yet nothing at all. I loved this episode. I’m here for the drama. Lol

I think this episode was meant to show Taki-sensei's relative inexperience in the role, in treating the students more like mature adults than hormonal teenagers, which allows the unease to fester (the situation is also based more on Japanese cultural norms, where seniority is ingrained into traditional society). But this is then balanced out by his temperament and ability to find a solution, he's talented but not so stubborn and set in his ways that he's unable to adapt, albeit after working through some frustration initially. Yuuko idolises Kaori (she's the embodiment of the "senpai, notice me" concept) and was a first year when all the drama went down before the start of the show, so she's even more protective of her senior that stuck it out and didn't abandon her throughout all of that. It doesn't excuse her behaviour, she's also overly dramatic and is meant to be irritating in this situation, but it does explain her misguided actions somewhat.

Hi Nittpicc: do your students watch this show? I think it could be quite inspirational for them. It's a story they could relate to...(you can, don't you?)
