I actually just recorded part 1 of The Daleks last week and it was fun seeing how they were the same. I'm sure that was really reassuring to Classic Who fans when they first saw this episode.

And the Doctor encountered Daleks before, so longtime fans would have immediately understood his emotional reaction. But you enjoyed the episode even without the context, so clearly the back story wasn't essential. Onward to 1x7!
