This was definitely the episode that finally got me fully on board with the show. That is one thing The OC didn't do quite as much of, character development. I mean, they did especially with Summer, Luke, and Julie (and Ryan as well, but not as much), but the rest of the characters had occasional ups and downs but mostly stayed the same.

This was the episode that got me hooked on this show. I was hesitant with the first few episodes. Like you, I also watched the Oc first, but I can honestly say One Tree Hill has some of the best character development with certain characters.

Yeah, the revelation of physical abuse wasn't all that surprising, but it was heartbreaking. And it actually makes me grateful Nathan hadn't been worse; especially to Peyton. I have been LOVING seeing Nathan realize that Dan isn't actually someone to aspire to be like to to try to please. Instead, he's starting to figure who HE actually wants to be, not who Dan wants him to be. I'm so excited to see his character continue to grow (also knowing we'll probably a few moments of backsliding in the process). I do like that it hasn't really been a "who's had it worse" competition between them. Nathat sharing what he did almost seemed more like a way to try to help Lucas feel better about not having Dan around, rather than a defensive, "Hey, it hasn't been great for me either," kind of thing. It was just so great. I like your take on complimenting the actor and not Dan. That works for me! HAHA I'm also glad to hear he's a great guy. :)

I love this episode. The brotherly moments between Nathan and Lucas are just some of my favourites. That moment where Nathan tells Lucas that story about Dan, revealing that it's not just emotional abuse that he's suffered because of Dan, but physical too... It really does give us that insight into why he is the way he is. Like, we've seen it in earlier episodes too, there have been moments of Dan being a complete asshole to Nathan. And we really see Nathan kinda mirroring his behaviour a lot. Dan's got a really strong hold on Nathan right now, like he wants Dan's approval and he wants to make him happy, even if that means doing things he's not entirely comfortable with. Kids tend to pick up on their parents' traits, and we see that a lot with Nathan and Dan. Nathan is slowly starting to realise that he doesn't WANT to be like Dan though, and he's getting to that point where he just doesn't want to be around him either I think. He needs to stay away from Dan as much as possible, because being around Dan brings out the worst in him... And I love seeing the bonding between Lucas and Nathan so much. I think this is when Lucas really started to realise that Nathan didn't just have it great because Dan chose him. In fact, Dan choosing him really messed him up. Something I really like about the way they handle the whole situation with them is that they never undermine either of their issues with Dan. Like, Lucas growing up without his Father doesn't take away from the trauma Nathan has from Dan's abuse and pressure, and the abuse Nathan suffered from Dan doesn't take away from the abandonment issues that Lucas has from not being raised by Dan. He fucked them both up and they both have issues because of it. Honestly, what I always say is that Dan should've left Deb as well and Keith should've found her and introduced her and Karen and the three of them should've raised the boys together... Without Dan in the picture... Also, what you said about not wanting to compliment anything about Dan but liking that colour on him. Think of that as complimenting the Actor. Paul is a great guy, so compliment him all you like! Hahaha
