2022-10-16 21:44:33 +0000 UTCI too wasn't enamoured by the Pilot episode, nor the Slitheen story (which played up to the childishness of the creatures far too much); but this two-parter was the first one which made me think "Yes,this series could actually be ok". I feel one of the problems was that the showrunners were generally unaccustomed at writing for a younger audience; but once they stopped talking down to the audience and discovered how to tell these types of stories while including interesting (and potentially relevant) family/character dilemmas, they really began to find their feet. SJS had met Sontarans in the Classic series - which tied in well with the recent 10th Doctor story. The old lady was played by Imelda Staunton, who is the mother of the actress/writer/director Emma Thompson (Nanny McFee)
