WATCH ALONG | DOCTOR WHO | 5x7 | Amy's Choice

amy desperately needs a therapist but i do empathise with her, she's my age and engaged to be married and, personally, I find that terrifying lol. i loveee rory too though and I have a really hard time watching them treat him the way they do. the most interesting thing about this episode to me is the peek into the doctor's self image!! rewatching it and knowing that the dream lord is his "darkness" (it WAS just him btw, he just is very perceptive about what amy and rory's wants and desires are, though he feigns ignorance, and was able to build the two worlds from there) means you catch all those insults and digs at the doctor that are really just his own guilt and stuff being reflected back at him. It shows how self-aware he is about the awful things he does :/ I agree that the "competing" aspect for the doctor is definitely not romantic and honestly I don't think amy's is either. it's feels very much about what the doctor has to offer (adventure, freedom, eternal childlike wonder, etc) vs what rory has to offer (stability, care, not dying horribly on some far off planet lol). the doctor knows that he CANT offer amy those things and that if she decides she does want them more, she'll leave him.. personally i think the problem is amy loves rory more than the doctor, but she loves the adventure and traveling just a tiny bit more than she loves rory.

I find lots of Amy’s behaviour to be objectionable. I don’t have a real problem with this generally as it is often interesting except when the show treats her as a fairytale character of perfect morals and doesn’t address it and expects us to forget it as it often does. This disconnect is also increased for me by how she is talked about in the fandom as her flaws are generally greatly diminished but I’ll leave you to make a more informed judgment as you see more of her.

Good reaction with solid insights. This one hits particularly hard right now due to my personal life, especially the idea of Amy stringing Rory along and not apologizing for running away with another man. I'm mentioning it not for anyone else's benefit, but as a reminder to myself, in case I should come across this comment later.
