WATCH ALONG | TORCHWOOD | 2x8 | A Day in the Death

Apologies for this one being late. I'm going to be really honest and admit that I just plain screwed up.

It's Thanksgiving today here in the US and I spent all day yesterday cleaning/cooking (we're hosting the family at our place for the holiday dinner) and getting client work done early since everyone pretty much takes the second half of the week off for the holiday.

With all that going on, I just never once realized what day it was. 😬

I feel awful for making such a stupid mistake, so I've decided to go ahead and publish episode 2x9 as well to hopefully make up for it. It's currently exporting and will be posted here shortly.

Maggie's surname was Hopley; she's just a one-off character, unrelated to Owen. I liked the touch of starting the rooftop story in the middle, and waiting until the last scene to explain fully how Owen came to be there. It's just a pity that so much suspension of disbelief (regarding the problem of Owen's breathing and talking) is needed for this episode, because otherwise it would be a nice quiet, reflective little study which makes the interesting choice to *not* have Owen back to normal at the end of his "arc", but nevertheless shows him moving on and rediscovering a sense of purpose. The problem could have been taken care of by, say, having Martha implant some UNIT technology into Owen which directly translated his brain impulses into speech, or some such. That would also have given her more of a reason for being there, and brought UNIT (as another collector of alien tech, possibly opposed to Torchwood) more out of the background. (In "Reset", those marvellous contact lenses of Martha's could also have been UNIT rather than Torchwood technology, thereby obviating the question of why weren't they used in previous episodes.) Great though it was to see Martha turn up for this three-episode stretch, the show didn't really make the best use of her in the last two.
