I almost think it's more that he knows the "other" Amy hates him and "our" Amy adores him. For someone who never wants to be alone, it's pretty clear which one he would rather have around. So, he does what he has to do to keep the situation the way HE wants it. At least, that's how I took it.

That he is. lol

Yeah, Karen did a fantastic job in this one. What's great is that she was able to pull making it clear they're both Amy, but they're actually two completely separate entities at this point. It's Amy, but not the Amy we know or could ever imagine before this. It's a different Amy, and for good reason.

I love this story for its romance, and I hate this story for how cruel the Doctor is. He knows damn well from the start that he can't save both Amys, and he lies to everyone rather than tell them the truth (until the VERY end). He must really distrust both Amy and Rory to lie to them like that.

The Doctor is an absolute bastard in this one lol

That's a great point. I also take into account that Rory choose to wait. There was another option, but he made the decision to wait, and knew exactly how long it would be for. Amy was essentially abandoned and didn't know if or when they'd come back for her.

I do really love this episode. I never skip this one and look forward to it on a rewatch. It really is a love story, but I think it's mostly the acting in this, especially from Karen. She really plays this version of Amy well. I completely believe that she's bitter from being stranded alone for almost 40 years. I believe she still in love with Rory and hates the Doctor. More importantly I believe she is the same person (Amy). That ending gets me every time. That and Rory telling her he doesn't care she grew old, but they didn't get to grow old together. Also, did we just get an episode where Amy dies and Rory lives? That's not how this is supposed to work lol.

The range of emotions makes this a favorite of mine: despair, love, hope, dashed hope, nostalgia, Rory's anger at the Doctor. The "Rory waited 2000 years" thing does tend to be everyone's initial reaction, overshadowing the premise. I feel we just need to accept that Rory was a plastic auton in a fairytale, setting an impossible standard. Holding human characters to that same Rory standard would otherwise ruin so many great movies and stories. The Shawshank Redemption, Castaway, The Breakfast Club, Waiting for Godot... all have people waiting in unpleasant circumstances, sometimes for hours, sometimes for months, sometimes for years. Their suffering is still moving and sympathetic and a big deal, despite Rory waiting a whole lot longer. I feel Amy's should be, too.
