WATCH ALONG | DOCTOR WHO | 7x10 | Hide

NOTICE: HBO Max in the United States seemingly uses different episode numbers for the second half of series 7 than UK streaming sites. So, if your episode number doesn't match mine, don't worry about it. Just go by the episode title.

It's difficult to get a handle on Clara for her first few episodes -- in "Cold War" and "Hide" especially, she is very much in "generic companion" mode. This is partly intentional, with the emotional relationship between the Doctor, Amy and Rory being replaced by something different, setting up the new companion as an intellectual puzzle to be solved. But I think it's also partly due to the behind the scenes chaos that made the second half of Series 7 the most stressful part of the whole of Steven Moffat's time on the show. By all accounts, he hit a wall badly when writing "The Snowmen", which was delayed for several months and ultimately made after several of Clara's other episodes. The actual production order of the later Series 7 episodes (using the same episode numbers you have) was: 7x10, 7x09, 7x12, 7x06 ("The Snowmen"), 7x11, 7x07, 7x08, 7x13, 7x14. And all the while, the immovable deadline of the fiftieth anniversary special in November 2013 was looming, with the expectation that it would be something absolutely spectacular. It's difficult to establish a consistent emotional through-line under those conditions, so it's probably just as well that Clara wasn't (at the start, anyway) a particularly complex character. Fortunately, Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman work so well together they're entertaining to watch even though the show took a while to sort out its new direction.

OK so last episode you love Outlander, and this episode you love Dougray Scott. I'm guessing you like the Scottish accent. As a Scotsman (who now lives in the US) that makes me happy, but it makes me even more excited for some episodes to come!!! πŸ˜‚

I really love this episode! It's great fun and it's really sweet too. It's a unique and interesting twist to have the alien actually not be evil, just looking for the love of it's life. And the connection between The Doctor and Clara really grows even more here. It's definitely one of my favourite series 7 episodes. 😊

Thank you so much for the heads up! I actually posted a screenshot on Discord a little bit ago of the DW reaction schedule from next week through the first episode of series 8 because it will be a little different than usual thanks to all the extra things I'll be watching as part of the 50th. I was going to wait until we got a little closer to post about it here on Patreon, but you're already the second person just today to ask, so it's probably best that I do it sooner rather than later. :)

I’m sure you’ve probably been told, but the 50th anniversary of the show is coming up with a number of different specials that may not be listed on HBO. Just want to make sure you get to see all the important specials and minisodes leading up to the anniversary episode itself.
