Rewatching this after seeing Game of Thrones, seeing Diana Rigg as the main villain was an unexpected treat. Same in retrospect with the main guests in the russian sub episode.

Yep, you hit on pretty much everything I was going to say. It's a shame this episode isn't great, because I love the Paternoster Gang.

This is a completely strange episode, which just doesn't feel right. However, if you look upon it as an Alternative Victorian Era story (in the same vein as The Next Doctor) it's actually quite alright. It feels as though it's paying homage to the Gothic (or Sensation) storytelling of that time (Frankenstein; the works of LeFanu etc),of which Gatis is a huge fan; rather than being specifically 'Who-ish'. In that regard, it's quite entertaining...but it's not something I have much of a hankering to rewatch :)

It's not the best, but I do always enjoy the Paternoster Gang, so really that's what I was here for, and that's it. Mrs Gillyflower is most known to reactor from Game of Thrones (which I haven't seen), Dame Diana Rigg. She's most famous overall for The Avengers (not Marvel, British TV show from the 60's). The actress who plays her daughter is actually her real life daughter, and I believe the only thing they've been in together. Sadly Dame Rigg died fairly recently in 2020.

Yep, I totally agree with you on this episode. It really isn't good. The majority of the fandom don't like it, so you're not alone. The plot is definitely flimsy, you're spot on there. A lot of it isn't properly explained and the tone of the episode seems to shift around. Also I hate that The Doctor didn't care when the old lady died and when Mr Sweet died, like yes she was evil and that creature was absolutely disgusting, but The Doctor was almost laughing and that didn't feel like him. Plus with Ada's struggles and with what she went through I felt like I should've felt more bad for her than I did, I don't know if it was the writing or the acting or a combination of the two, but I just didn't really care what happened to her when I really should have. If that makes sense. And I hated The Doctor kissing Jenny. Like he could've playfully kissed Ada or Clara, especially because him and Clara seem to have something more than friendship going on. That would've made sense. But nope, the writers were like "let's have The Doctor kiss the lesbian" and that was just wrong imo. Oh and the ending seemed totally random. Why would the kids find pictures from the past of someone who looks like Clara with a man and immediately assume that he's her alien boyfriend and that they travel through time together? Like why not assume that she's Clara's great grandma or something? And how would they know The Doctor is an alien, he looks human? That made no sense at all. But it does tie into the next episode so... But bad things aside lol. Strax was as funny as always. I love how they keep bringing up how clever Clara is and she keeps proving it, we've never had a companion with her level of intelligence before and I think that's one reason why The Doctor loves her so much. She can actually keep up with him and understand him. And the fainting guy cracked me up. πŸ˜‚ So yeah, overall not a good episode at all. But the next episode is fun and the one after that is EPIC! So I look forward to next week. And I hope you'll feel better soon. πŸ’•
