Several of the Series 7 episodes fell a bit short for me, but there's no doubt Steven Moffat got back on top form at the end. For a classic series fan, all the nods to the past here felt like unexpectedly starting the 50th anniversary party six months early. Even apart from that, though, I think it surpasses both of the two previous Moffat series finales because it works on both the emotional and the plot-logic level. In Series 5, "The Big Bang" was a beautifully emotional climax to the season, but bringing the Doctor back into existence through the power of memory is basically a fairytale ending. The following year, the explanation of the season-long tease of the Doctor's apparent death was an ingenious piece of plotting but didn't have much emotional resonance. This ending, though, was both emotionally satisfying (even more so with the River/Doctor scene afterwards) and very cleverly thought out. It also draws a firm line under the whole "impossible girl" mystery; up to this point, Clara has been as much a puzzle piece as a person, but from now on she no longer needs to be kept at a distance from the audience. And regarding the "Unknown Bonus" reaction (based on the length, I know what it is): my vote is to watch it exactly where you've scheduled it... :-)

The River Song timeline video you are talking about, there are different versions of it which were updated after her appearances in the show. I have a URL to one which was released BEFORE this episode, so it covers everything you've already seen up to the library, but not this episode. Let me know if you want the URL to watch it. It is on youtube though, and I know you are careful to avoid YT as much as possible because of the recommended videos and thumbnails that can have spoilers. I love this episode so much, and I'm really excited to get into the 50th content now.

I loved watching this with you!! This is my second favourite series finale of the whole show, my favourite being series 9. But this one is SO SO brilliant! Vastra and Jenny really do have the most beautiful relationship. And Strax never fails to crack me up. Those three bring so much to the show for me. Like you I struggle with the River stuff. I've rewatched Doctor Who 10+ times easily and I still don't really understand it lol. So I'm also glad that the explanation behind Clara showing up in multiple places was a simple one. But it was also very clever. I didn't predict it at all and I loved that. Also what happens in this episode really pushes The Doctor and Clara even closer together. He let go of River in a way and he saw Clara basically sacrifice herself to save him. And then he did the same to save her. And this is the first time The Doctor calls her "my Clara" which just melts my heart. He loves her so much and he's really realizing that now. The Doctor hasn't known her for long but he's already risked the universe to save her and it won't be the last time he does that. No spoilers of course, but what Clara eventually becomes and what The Doctor does for her, it'll blow you away! I'm SO excited for the 50th. I can think of like 10 things off the top of my head that are going to make you freak out/cry lol. I want it to be next Friday already!! 😍

A question should never be answered, hidden in plain sight. The question hes been running from all his life... Doctor Who?" - Dorian (S6 E13: Wedding of River Song)
