For the first time in the show's history, a story has absolutely no credited cast in common with the previous one -- and the only other time that happened was (not surprisingly) with "Rose" in 2005. Another similarity between the two is the opening shot out in space, panning left to find the Earth, which was deliberately echoed in "Rose". In fact, "Spearhead from Space" looks even more different to the previous season than was initially planned; because of a scenery-shifters' strike at the BBC, they couldn't use the normal practice of videotaping interior scenes in studio sets. So, for the only time in classic Who, the entire story was recorded on location and on film. This leads to the sound quality being a bit odd and echoey in places due to the limitations of filming in real buildings, but also means the interiors look unusually solid and convincing (especially the corridors and rooms of the hospital). And it was while wandering around the location on his own that Jon Pertwee discovered that bathroom with its magnificent Victorian-era shower stall, and rushed back to the director to insist they find a way to work it in to the story... :-)

2023-07-06 21:53:38 +0000 UTCwe had similar reactions to jon pertwee's tanlines and tattoo lol. the doctor in anything less than six layers already seems naked to me but damn they really went all out in episode two lmfao Anyway, now you can catch the reference to this doctor in the eleventh hour when matt smith steals his clothes from a hospital!
