This episode gets a very mixed response but I really like it. I actually think it's interesting that nothing gets resolved and that we never find out what the creatures are or how any of this happens or where the story goes. There's never been an episode like it on the show before. And that ending with the man talking directly to the viewers and telling us to make everyone we know watch the footage and saying we've all been infected and have something in our eye is SO spooky and clever. I actually forgot about this episode. It's the only episode in series 9 that's not a two/three parter. Which is funny because it's probably the only one that really needs to be. I would've taken a part two of this one over the second part of the story with Ashildr/Me because that one I'm not a fan of. 😂 But yeah, because there are so many unanswered questions there's not much to say about this episode other than I like it. Oh and I did love the moment of The Doctor and Clara holding hands. He cares about her so much. I love the progress he's made from not wanting to touch Clara at all to him being the one to initiate hugs and hand holding. He's grown so much because of her. 😊

2023-07-29 02:07:17 +0000 UTCMark Gatiss did originally conceive this story as a (sort of) two-parter, intending to write a sequel episode for the following season set on Triton, where we would have seen more of the 38th-century civilisation we only heard about here. This would presumably follow up the results of Rasmussen's transmission and its unleashing of the Sandmen on humanity, allowing the Doctor to realise what he had missed the first time around and rectify his mistake. However, the poor response to this episode (among other factors) meant that the idea was quickly dropped. It's not hard to see why viewers were turned off -- anyone tuning in expecting another adventure with the Doctor and Clara found themselves faced with a deliberately disjointed narrative (told mostly in dark, off-putting "shaky-cam" footage that at times is actually unpleasant to watch) in which Clara barely registers and the Doctor is ultimately totally fooled and achieves nothing. The ending "meta" twist is quite like the tag at the end of "Blink", which put forward the idea that every statue in the world might be a Weeping Angel. However, that was simply a bonus, coming at the end of a tale that had already been properly wrapped up in its own right. Here, the effect of the surprise twist is to undermine the rest of the episode, and with no follow-up "Sleep No More" becomes just a rather pointless shaggy-dog story.

There's definitely some loose threads/things that weren't fully explained but I actually really enjoy that sometimes. I also was pretty slow on the uptake on my first watch so I can't personally blame Clara and the other characters for taking a bit to get it- especially considering the characters would have been much more focused on the situation/staying alive than the perspectives in the video clips the Doctor brought up

2023-07-28 16:47:15 +0000 UTCThere was supposed to be a part 2 of this story in the next season but it got scrapped as this episode wasnt received well by the fans. I would of liked to see a part 2 just so everything is explained but oh well.
