"You said the name you chose was a Promise. What was that Promise?" "Never Cruel or Cowardly." "Because if you're very wise, and very strong, Fear doesn't have to make you Cruel or Cowardly. Fear Can Make You Kind."

This is my favourite episode of all time, so I'm glad you loved it this much. In this episode we're supposed to be left wondering. Was there something knocking or was it just the ship making noises? Was there a creature on the bed or just another kid messing about? Did The Doctor write "Listen" on the chalkboard and forget or did something else write it? Etc etc. We'll never know. The whole point of the episode is that fear makes us think there's something bad in the dark when there isn't. And I love that concept. And again we see just how significant Clara is to The Doctor's life. She does SO SO many incredible things for him, she's been to Gallifrey multiple times now and she knows him better than anyone else ever has I think. It's amazing, she's amazing. I also think it's SO clever how Clara was the one who grabbed The Doctor's leg. And I love the parallel between The Doctor telling young Danny about fear being a good thing and then Clara telling that to The Doctor as a child. It's like The Doctor subconsciously remembered what she'd told him. And the stuff with the toy soldier and Orson will only become more confusing later on... And I have a little story that involves this episode. I'm scared of the dark and I also have an anxiety disorder that basically keeps me housebound. I have panic attacks every day and I'm scared all the time. So the message of this episode, and of Clara's speech in particular, means SO much to me. I was lucky enough to meet Jenna at a local comic con a few years ago and I told her this, she was so kind and listened like she actually cared. And then when she signed the autograph for me she wrote "fear is a superpower" on it. I nearly cried right there. That autograph has been up on my bedroom wall ever since. So this episode will always be uniquely special to me. 😊 (also I am one of the people who's been talking about what The Doctor and Clara's relationship is, I didn't realize you didn't want that. So I won't say anything about that from now on)

This is definitely one of the episodes ever. I always forget how strong and kind Clara is in this one. I wish I knew the right thing to say to people when they are hurting.

I've been looking forward to this after a rather rubbish week! Watching along again with someone knew is really making me realise how much I love Capaldi as the Doctor, I'm surprised at how excited I've been for him to arrive. I may just have to change my official favourite Doctor to 12...

One of your best reactions, to one of the best episodes of the show. For me, this is where the Capaldi era really takes off. After the pressure and stress of Series 7 and the 50th anniversary, the arrival of Capaldi seemed to give Steven Moffat a bit of a creative "second wind". Since taking over as showrunner, Moffat had mainly been doing the big, flashy blockbuster episodes (season openers, finales, Christmas specials etc.), but for this year he deliberately reserved a slot in the schedule where he could write a small-scale "chamber piece". I love how he can keep finding new and original shapes for his stories -- "Listen" is simply unlike anything the show has ever done before. Very unusually, the Doctor is driving the story from the outset, following his own interests; his casual outfit lets us know that he's having a day off from randomly arriving somewhere and getting involved in other people's concerns. And then, of course, the "small-scale" story just keeps expanding in scope until it stretches to the end of the universe and the deepest reaches of the Doctor's own life. Not to mention the very beginnings of the show itself -- Clara's final line ("Fear makes companions of us all") is a quote from the very first story back in 1963.

Fun fact to avoid the video not pausing. The spacebar isnt actually the pause/play button, it just does the action the cursor is highlighted on (Thats the best way i can describe it lol) which is why it doesnt work sometimes. Technically, the K button is the official play/pause button. So if you press k it will work every time. Wonderful episode though.
