WATCH ALONG | DOCTOR WHO | 2014 Christmas Special: Last Christmas

Am I the only one that noticed that her face only changed after he put the hat on her? I always thought he somehow changed her face to look young again so HE could see it one last time, and not look at her as an old woman in their last time together. I know it's an odd theory but if you watch, that's when her face changed. Just my thoughts, anyways!

This Xmas episode saved Series 8 for me, it's in my top tier. I'm a big fan of sci-fi that doesn't shy away from hard philosophical questions, like "what is consciousness" (versus dreaming).

Series 8 is my least favourite series of modern Who but this Christmas story is my favourite so far. I love the cross between Doctor Who, Santa and Aliens. it's spooky and cheesy at the same time. Rated 4/5 and ranked 28/140. Looking forward to series 9. I didn't like it at first (mainly because I hadn't really liked series 7 & 8) but it became my favourite Calpadi series. Four of the stories are in my top 20.

Santa (the aptly named Nick Frost) is the person you are thinking of, with the Simon Pegg colabs. This was supposed to be Clara's last episode, but she was convinced to stay on which is why the extra Santa scene at the end and the final dream wake-up feels a little strange. It wasn't in the original story. Rumor has it that Shona was going to be the new companion. I'm thinking they might have explained the whole "Forgive Dave" thing if she'd stayed on. The Professor is one of Patrick Troughton's sons. We've met another of Troughton's sons before in Midnight, the David Tennant episode where they were trapped on that tour vehicle. Interestingly he played a professor too. Oh and Ian the Elf is played by Dan Starkey. Mostly known for his role as Strax! It's so strange to see him out of prosthetics lol.

The Doctor and Clara both got what they wanted for Christmas:)

This Christmas special is not only my favourite Christmas special, but it's my favourite episode of the whole show. I just LOVE it. It is definitely cheesy lol. But Christmas is my favourite time of year and this episode was like they combined the movie Alien with the movie The Santa Clause. And I think it worked brilliantly. I rewatch this episode every Christmas and I just smile throughout. Fun fact for you, Jenna was originally going to leave after this special, the original script has her as an old woman being the end of the story. But Peter talked to her and he said that he felt that his Doctor hadn't had enough time with Clara and he really wanted her to stay for longer. And Stephen Moffat said that he told Jenna about the ending and that she wasn't feeling it and she felt Clara deserved better. So those things combined meant that Jenna signed a new contract and they added that final scene on to the script of The Doctor and Clara reuniting and continuing to travel together. And I'm SO glad they did because that's maybe my favourite moment from the entire show. This Doctor is rarely happy, but the big beaming grin on his face at getting another chance with his Clara is something so special. And he basically begs her to stay and they hold hands and she kisses his cheek, I could watch that scene 5000 times and never get bored of it. 😍 And oh the way she hugged him on the sleigh was so adorable and I love how he settled into it. And with 12 and Clara it's the little moments that make the difference for me. It's the way that she let him go to find Gallifrey and he let her stay with Danny but they'd actually both lied to protect each other, that's beautiful. And I love how The Doctor said he'd only hold Clara's hand, because he feels comfortable with her. And I love how he said she looked no different to him when she was old, I think that was meant to be a good thing lol, he's saying that he still sees her as beautiful because that's what she always is to him. The Doctor only insults her as a deflection, because he's lost so many people and the way he feels about her scares him. At least I like to think about it in that way. And old Clara said there was someone else she was in love with but he was impossible, which was obviously about The Doctor. And when old Clara couldn't pull her Christmas cracker, The Doctor put his hands on hers to help her and this directly parallels 11's last episode was he was old and she helped him pull a cracker in the same way. I know you're not sure how you feel about them being romantic which is fine, but I've made it very clear that I strongly believe that they are. I've mentioned their ship name before, Whouffaldi. Basically the ship name of 11 and Clara was Whouffle, Doctor Who and Soufflé Girl. So when 11 became 12 we kept the "Who" for Doctor Who and the "uff" for Soufflé girl and added the "aldi" for Capaldi lol. So yeah, WHOUFFALDI FOREVER! 😂💕 And since you were wondering about the tangerines, it's a traditional British thing to put a tangerine at the bottom of a Christmas stocking. And like The Doctor said, no one likes the tangerines lol. But everyone does this. There's a story called A Visit From Saint Nicholas that was written in 1823. In the story Santa would drop gold coins into the stockings of poor people. And at that time British people really were poor and tangerines were like an exotic fruit that wasn't cheap but wasn't too much for most people, so they'd buy tangerines for their children as a treat and put them in their stockings to symbolize the gold coins from Santa in the story. And it's just a tradition that's stuck around. 🙂 Also there's a fan theory that Santa actually is a future version of The Doctor. In the series 8 mid credits scene Santa finds The Doctor in the TARDIS and tells him that Clara needs him, how would he know this? And remember 9 saying something to Rose about getting her a red bike when she was 7? Plus Santa did make a joke about his sleigh being bigger on the inside. And that would explain the tangerine at the end. That doesn't mean they're still dreaming, it means Santa AKA The Doctor succeeded in his mission to save Clara and to bring his younger self back together with her. It's a bit of a reach maybe lol but I love that theory. I could go on and on about this episode but I've talked enough for now haha. I look forward to the start of series 9 next week, it's got some great episodes imo. I look forward to seeing your reactions. 😊

A nice coincidence, given that you're currently watching "The War Games", which featured a small role for Patrick Troughton's son David -- in this episode, Professor Albert is played by Patrick's other son, Michael Troughton. I agree that this episode functions more as a finale for Series 8 than a prelude to Series 9. By the time it's over, both Clara and the Doctor have worked through all the baggage they've accumulated over the last year, and the ending genuinely feels like a fresh start, looking forward to all-new adventures.

This is actually my favorite christmas special so far. It wasn't on the first watch, but I think 2nd or 3rd time it clicked and I still find it genius. As usual with Moffats stories, there are a lot of details an connections you miss at first. It generally took some time for me to get into 12 generally. Didn't like series 8 much at first, but then it really grew on me.
