That's the punchline to Nicholas Courtney's favourite behind-the-scenes anecdote, as told at countless Doctor Who conventions -- you can probably fill in the rest for yourself... :-) It's somewhat surprising that it took Doctor Who seven years to get around to using the parallel-world idea. As with "The Silurians" and its plague sub-plot, this was a way of enlarging the scope of the story so that it made full use of its seven episodes, and was an excellent way to handle the problem of constructing such a long story. After all, seven episodes of just arguing about drilling could only be described as totally boring...
