WATCH ALONG | DOCTOR WHO | 2017 Christmas Special: Twice Upon a Time

So, I'm not positive where the bit about children came from. I've heard it came from Capaldi and after brief googling, I saw articles saying Capaldi got it from a fan. However, it makes sense. Doctor Who is a kids' show, but not every kid gets into it. But if their hearts are in the right place, and the stars are too (i.e. a kid gets introduced to the show by someone or by chance), children can hear the name: Doctor Who. I imagine this also kind of harkens to the show's philosophy of our beloved protagonist leading with empathy and intelligence first, rather than violence, relating to the lack of lost innocence/optimism in children.

I'm back lol. I didn't watch your series 10 reactions because I just don't like this series. I know I'm massively in the minority on that, many people have it as their number 1, but it's bottom of my list. I found the stories too dark, I never connected with Bill, I found Nardole irritating and I just don't think Peter worked as well with anyone as he did with Jenna. 12 and Clara had something more special than I can describe and that moment in this episode when he sees her again and gets his memories of her back makes me cry every time, in that second he looks happier than he has all series. That says it all to me. πŸ˜πŸ’• But that aside. This episode is a good one, seeing the 1st Doctor again was awesome although I do feel they went a bit far with the sexist jokes. The early Doctors could be rude and dismissive of their companions but weren't anything like that imo. But it was cool having 1 and 12 together and David Bradley does a brilliant job. I also love the lighting, scenery and music in this episode. The production value overall is so good. And Peter's regeneration is done well. It's far from my favourite regeneration scene, I agree that the bit about children hearing his name doesn't really make sense. That takes me out of the moment a bit. But I like how he keeps his sense of humour in his speech and I like the emphasis on kindness. πŸ’•

Capaldi was exceptionally good as the Doctor. Imo,he is the finest actor to have played the role (so far). The intensity - the emotion - the humour. He was just pitch perfect. This Christmas Special is undoubtedly one of my favorites. The only irritation, for me, is the rewriting of the First Doctor as "sexist elderly 1960's man'; which does him a disservice. Yes,he was grumpy and curmudgeonly - but I never got the impression of old-fashioned chauvinism from him! His respect and affection for Barbara would seem to contradict this sharply. Indeed,Moffat even admitted that he overdid this element in order to get laughs. On the other hand, his writing of The Captain's story is some of his finest. In an entirely unplanned (and unanticipated - at least,by me) way, Britany's watching of the Classic and Revived eras has dovetailed beautifully here! It couldn't have been any better if it had been pre-planned :)

You might have recognised Mark Gatiss as the Captain here from the Lazarus Experiment with 10 and Martha. He's also written a good number of episodes too, so the name might be familiar. My favourite of his was probably Robot of Sherwood, its a fun guilty pleasure on a rewatch. There are things I personally don't like about the Jodie era, but her as the Doctor absolutely isn't one of them. Growing up 10 was my Doctor, but I've had to admit on rewatch now that 12 is my favourite. He just is the Doctor, the depth and understanding he brings is unlike anyone else. He had such an amazing character arch too.

I can confirm the christmas truce happened. the only time in history. Both sides forbade it after that.

I know people who absolutely hated the Moffat era, whereas I loved what Moffat brought to the show. In fact, by this point in the show, I met Moffat at a Doctor Who convention and he had received so much hate for what he brought to the show he was visibly upset about his legacy (he'd had a couple of drinks at this point so wasn't hiding it very well). RTD also got some hate over his decision to kill off the timelords, and taking the show in a new format. The difference with Chibnall getting hate is that the internet is a much louder place now, so it was more in our faces. Incidentally I also met Chibnall this year at a convention and he is a super lovely guy. I could have chatted to him for hours. I think you are making the right decision to not listen to the hate, and take from the show what YOU take from the show. That's what we are here to see. Your unbiased reaction. Personally I do think Chibnalls era is the weakest, however he does have some VERY strong episode in amongst that so it's definitely worth going in with an open mind. 12 is my favorite Doctor to date, and I miss him all over again now that you've concluded his era.

If I recall, it was shared with Peter as head canon by a young fan (possibly an infirm fan but my memory was hazy) and Peter loved the idea of it, so Moffat wrote it in for him

End of an era. Moffat is gone but also Murray Gold is gone too. Murray was the man who did the music since the beginning of New Who. This episode was a tribute to him, thats why you heard some of the legendary tracks of the shows past as a sendoff. It has to be said, I think 12 has the best character arc in Who. From where he started, not knowing who he was or if was a good man to giving that speech to the next Doctor telling them who he is. Amazing. Also im fairly confident in saying it was Peter's idea to add the "children can hear his name" part. Also, you may not have remembered Rusty the good Dalek from Series 8 where The Doctor got miniaturized and tried to make him good. Very random return, I dont think anyone expected it lol. In regards to the next era, its not for me. I watched Series 11 and could not get into it at all so ended up not watching the rest of the upcoming era.

Happy and sad to see this episode. Peter/12 is my Doctor (even though I started with 11). I loved his kinda dry cold humor and attitude to start with; and then how in the end he became all about kindness and more laid back. Hopefully you will like the next few seasons; I do fall in the camp that they aren’t my favorite. I don’t doubt that you’ll like 13; Jodi is quite lovely and I really enjoyed her Doctor. I think it was just the writing and overall feeling of the show in Chibnals hands just felt β€œdifferent”. But that may not be bad for you. πŸ™‚
