WATCH ALONG | CLASSIC DOCTOR WHO | 8x4 | Terror of the Autons: Part 4

Comments

It’s a good story. Bob Holmes hitting his stride as Who’s greatest ever writer. The Master begins with his usual nonsensical, convoluted plan.

Terror of the Autons is a very fun story with great introductions for Jo and the Master. I love how this story expands on the previous Auton story and shows any kind of plastic can be turned into a weapon by the nestene consciousness. This story also feels very different to the previous seasons much more gritty, grounded tone. It replaces it with a faster, comic strip like feel that would prove to be very successful in the years to come. I also love how this story immediately establishes the dynamic between the Doctor and the Master. Two intellectual equals with a great deal of respect and even admiration for one another, but constantly trying to upstage the other. You really get a sense that these two characters used to friends, but somewhere along the way things changed. There's clearly still something there though as both seem to enjoy all this chaos a little too much and treat as sort of game the two are playing with each other. I also love how they immediately set Jo apart from her predecessor. She's clearly not as book smart as Liz was and is much more impulsive, but she makes up for it with her determination to take the initiative and try and help in whatever way she can. It's easy to tell even this early on Jo will be a fiercely loyal and compassionate companion.
