This one ive seen sorta cited a couple of times as an example of the writing of this doctors morals being all over the place… It could’ve been a very good “eff the system” thing… especially with how it came out Amazon was treating its staff around about when this was aired; instead the Doctor claims the system isn’t the problem. The writing, for me, ALMOST makes a point then misses it completely. We see in our lives that the system is the problem. Because it’s built that way. Certain people are ALSO the problem. Compare this to the 12th Doctor’s speech on capitalism in “Oxygen”. Not only that but then 13 straight up murders that guy, like you said. She could’ve sent those robots anywhere. Also I’m surprised by your surprise at deaths now 😂 Not sure there’s been a single episode of NuWho without a death or 5 billion.

2024-05-01 18:27:47 +0000 UTCThis is one of the episodes that I really enjoy for this series. I was glad that Judy turned out to not be a villain as well. One little fun fact to look at as a clue in retrospect is that the system wanted to put the Doctor with Charlie since she was assigned janitorial but switched jobs with Graham. Also since watching this episode I don't think I have ever popped bubble wrap since.

2023-10-21 17:03:52 +0000 UTCDecent episode. Usually the only episode this series, apart from the first two, that I don't skip on a rewatch. Like Christopher said, they don't over do the preaching aspect of things in this episode and there's none of the over explaining that's a big issue with this series in general for me. My only issue with this episode is that Dan dies so soon. Dan is played by British stand up comedian Lee Mack, he's a BIG deal here and it was major news when he was cast in the show. So it was disappointing that his character played such a small part in the episode. But apart from that I like it. The twist of Charlie being the bad guy was great, I didn't see that coming at all. At first I thought it was the boss guy, then I thought it was Judy, then I thought it was the system itself, then I thought it was Judy again lol. But I never once suspected Charlie. Very clever. I also like the little throwback moments in this episode like the fez and the Agatha Christie reference. I also think Jodie's series 11 acting is at it's best in this episode. And I quite like how many deaths there are in this series, it makes sense. In Classic Who, The Doctor didn't have much of an issue with killing, that's an ongoing theme I've noticed when watching through those. But then the time war happened and it scarred The Doctor, it showed her what she'd become. So 9 was totally against any killing, 10 was as well. But then when we reached 11 he started letting it happen more, like on Dinosaurs In A Spaceship for example. And then again with 12 that willingness to let people die increased even more with the robot man in Deep Breath and the workers in Under The Lake/Before The Flood for example. All leading to him killing the general on Gallifrey to save Clara, amoung other things. So given this progression, it totally fits that 13 would be so much more willing to let people die than her predecessors. And that's one of the few things I like about series 11, they kept that trend going. 😊
