I think the Master leaving the Earth to its fate and trying to escape using the Doctor’s TARDIS is one of the most interesting parts of this story. It does make sense that the Master would always look out for himself and never completely trust anyone. Especially since he had already been burned by supposed allies in the preceding two stories. It shows a nice bit of character development from the Master and rewards the viewer if they watched S8 in order up to this point. I also really liked how Chinn abandoned his plan to horde all the Axonite for Britain alone when that plan started to backfire on him because of what the Master did. It shows all that nationalistic tripe politicians spew is a cynical attempt to gain support for themselves and nothing else. As soon as it starts going against them, they'll abandon ship and try something else to save their own skin. Chinn shows that certain politicians have no principles. The actor playing him gives quite a ott performance (enjoyably so imo), but the way he was written and utilised within the story was really clever. The political commentary in ‘The Claws of Axos’ is underrated. The best parts of this story are again - to the surprise of no one – the scenes between the Doctor and the Master. The tease that the Doctor might abandon Earth and escape with the Master is really well done because – considering what we’ve seen from the third Doctor so far – it’s entirely possible it’s something he’d consider doing. I really like how the previous two stories have focused on showing us how similar these two characters are in a lot of ways, but then this story shows their key differences. That despite his flaws, the Doctor will selflessly sacrifice himself to protect those he cares about. The Master is the exact opposite and is doing everything he can to escape Earth to save himself throughout the story. This season has done such a great job of exploring the dynamic between the Doctor and the Master. Another really good story. That's 7/7 for the third Doctor's era so far, this era has yet to miss!
