Scott, A critical piece of information was missed which may affect how you proceed in the future with these runs: Bulbasaur is a portmanteau of “Bulb” and “Dinosaur”. The bulb is a reference to the plant-shaped object on its back. Dinosaur is most likely a reference to the reptiles that went extinct millions of years ago. I expect this information will shave off a couple of minutes during your gameplay!

About the EVS, you're probably just going to have to accept that grinding specific EVS for a timed solo challenge is just not practical. I think that for Pokemon that would breeze through the game, they won't be affected by this system that much, and they will all generally be working with the exact same spread by the end of the game (everyone has the same mandatory battles). For pokemon that do have to grind, especially if it is early, I think it would benefit to target train them. Also, I'll say right now, if memory serves me correctly, special attackers really get the short end of the stick in the early game for where they can grind. My main advice, if you take only one thing away from all of these comments: speed EVS are plentiful throughout the game, and speed is way more important in these later generations than the first 2. Once your EVs are capped it really limits the ability to move first for Pokemon in mid to low speed tiers.

I found it from the browser, so no worries.

Good tip!

I wish I knew how...

There is a lot to watch now if you want to follow everything I do!

Scotts Thoughts

Oh gosh, I am falling behind on the videos. Somehow missed this one.

Headless Koala

I recently became a patreon and watched the first few vids at increased speed in the app, but can't find the option now. Does anyone have the same problem or perhaps a fix? And Scott. Great at stuff as always 👌💪

Something to keep in mind if you ever need to train in mid to late game: the vs seeker is great used at the top of cycling road, where all those bikers gather, if you put it at the right spot you will be able to roll to trigger most of them every time so get a lot of rematches easy all clustered

I noticed you mixing them and saying 555 when meaning to talk about the max individual each could get, lol. Btw, it was interesting that, aside from Solar Beam and Giga Drain later on and some early grass moves against Brock, Misty, and the SD Hiker, you mostly relied on physical moves. Maybe Sludge Bomb would've been more useful with the STAB bonus in a few cases. Feels like a bit of 4 move syndrome where Venasaur has trouble working an optimal set with that limitation

I'll probably do a comparison video. Ideal EVs vs No EVs

Scotts Thoughts

Yeah, "which also ruins the pokemons time" is exactly why I'm struggling to intentionally use EVs. It seems that for solo playthroughs just gaining experience is better than specifically targeting Pokemon for EVs.

Scotts Thoughts

if it later becomes possible, you might consider setting a pokemons EVs at the start, though that feels to me very weird. while you can reset for a perfect starter in IVs, EVs are just not inherent.

CivMaster

EVs give 1 stat point per 4 EV at lvl100, at lvl50 it is 1 stat point per 8 EV points. a lvl10 pokemon needs 40 EV points to get a single stat point increase. due to the way the formula is structured the numerical effectiveness of EV points goes up, the higher the pokemons level becomes. generally this scaling doesnt matter due to modenr games letting you relativly easily reset your EVs, in gen3 this is not realistic. so if you want to use EVs you might have to grind them preemptivly somewhere(which also ruins the pokemons time), other option might be routing for EV gain? maybe fighting a different trainer group to gain more of a certain stats EV points.

CivMaster

That's a neat idea!

Scotts Thoughts

510 total EVs, 255 max in each stat. Pretty sure that's what I said.

Scotts Thoughts

I almost wonder if keeping Razor Leaf for the high crit/Overgrow boost is worth it. I feel like the other starter’s time will be faster just because it’s easier to use their abilities, becuase they can’t self heal with their moves.

Eric Strasshofer

255 maximum EVs, not 555. Also, I basically just recommend finding out which Pokemon at each training hurdle give which stat points. It's a pain and a lot to learn, but it'll help. Or at least learn the EVs of the best Pokemon to train against, that way you can EV train while grinding for levels. There isn't much better advice for dealing with the EV system in these games. Sell the vitamins you don't use for ones you like 🤷‍♂️
