Talking Critic - Sherman of Arabia

It's The Critic's first (and only) flashback episode! Jay takes us back to the magical year of 1991, when he became an unwitting news correspondent—and later a POW—during the first Iraq War. This time capsule within a time capsule reveals the lighter side of Operation Desert Storm, years before we realized it'd have a sequel. Listen to this episode now, because the balloon doggies demand it!

I ended up deleting this one around 3/4 of the way through. I was tuning in for an episode about the critic, but instead got a bunch of opinions on politics. I understand that politics were obviously why this happened, but the opinions on them became just too much. C'mon guys.

Although I don't see any other correlation besides name, when I watched this episode again the phrase "sissy slap party" triggered a memory of a short film by Guy Maddin that a classmate of mine showed me from college. It was called "Sissy Boy Slap Party" and is shot in black and white replicating some styles of 40s/50s filmmaking (this short was shot in 1985). Not sure if that's the reference from the Propganda film Jay has to watch, but here's a link if anyone is interested (Semi NSFW) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmusLsA-jG0

They said in the show they are watching them in production order, not broadcast order.

the $1.75 raised from Critic Aid is my line of the show.

Jay's glowing skeleton due to "chemical weapons" was probably meant to refer to the side-effects of using Depleted Uranium rounds in Desert Storm. The armor-piercing DU rounds were lightly radioactive and the subsequent side effects of said radiation were considered to be a partial cause of some of the symptoms of what was then called "Gulf War Syndrome", higher risks of cancer, and a large spike in birth defects in Iraqi children. Rather than point at any possible wartime impropriety by the U.S., they probably changed the joke rather than draw government ire.

No problem!

Great, thank you for the clarification guys!

Yep, I think we mentioned on this episode (or the last) that the production order for S2 is way different than the order they aired. Our episode order is based on the production order, which is also reflected on the DVDs.

Bob Mackey

Talking Critic goes in production order, while the Youtube playlist you're using is probably going by the airing order. Check the episode list on Wikipedia to see what's coming up.

In ten years of living in Japan I have yet to meet a single Japanese person who even remembers George Bush throwing up on their head of state. I have a hunch that "bush is a verb in Japan" was a thing for five minutes in 1992 and then forgotten forever. Japanese comedy is full of one-and-gone catchphrases and jokes.

Are you guys watching out of order now? I've been watching along with the Youtube playlist and I thought the next one was "Siskel & Ebert & Jay & Alice"

"Bye Felicia" did have a resurgence, thanks to Straight Outta Compton. There was a scene in the film that...inspired it.

That Keaton/Davis/Reeve movie is called Speechless. I sometimes mix it up with Switching Channels, another romantic comedy where Reece is the foil to the stars (Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner), this time in a tepid His Girl Friday remake.
