Talking Simpsons - The Problem with Apu

In this very special bonus episode of Talking Simpsons, we take a look at The Problem with Apu, a new documentary by comedian Hari Kondabolu about his relationship with Apu as a South Asian American. Whether or not you agree with Hari's argument, you should at least be able to see how his life experiences could give him a complicated relationship with the famous Kwik-E-Mart clerk.

I think about this as well during conversations about representation and people of color in the Simpsons. His jokes weren't even strong references to Chapolin Colorado. But I liked it as a kid and haven't seen recent episodes much, so maybe there are more latino characters now.

I don't watch The Simpsons but I'm exactly like Bob- anytime a problematic character is called out, OWN UP TO IT and recast them. It's not like Hank Azaria will be out of work (he voices a billion other characters and gets that sweet residual cash), and yeah, the fact he didn't appear on the documentary DID make him look like a jerk. Also- I'm German-Jewish/Italian, hence the last name. But to my brain, I'm just white, so constantly hearing "But I voice this offensive white stereotype!" falls on deaf-ears- to most white people, my people are now just white people.

Where is bumblebeeman in the problem minority representation talk. Im am Mexican and I get Bumblebeeman to represent me. He’s never been more than a punchline and to add insult to injury they never get the translations right. I still like the Simpsons and I don’t hate bumblebeeman but he has never sat well with me. Just like everyone else Im not sure there is a satisfying solution to all the characters.
