Willie hating the French always bugged me as a Scottish person. Hating the French is much more of an English thing. Historically Scotland and France had an official alliance which was essentially built on mutual hatred of England, it's technically still in effect some 800 years later! It's known as the "auld alliance" in Scotland and is always mentioned whenever we play France in a football or rugby match.
