Talking Futurama - A Fishful of Dollars

We hope you like anchovies, because this episode is covered in them! When Fry discovers the 93 cents in his 1999 bank account has grown to 4.3 billion dollars in the year 3000, he immediately starts indulging in 20th century luxuries—including his favorite salty little fish. But he soon runs afoul of Mom, who wants to get her spindly fingers on the last remaining tin of anchovies. Will Fry throw away his fortune to learn the true meaning of friendship? Order a cheese pizza and a large soda and get ready for this week's episode!

This episode is very funny but it always bugged me because Mom destroys Fry for no reason at all (he would have eaten the anchovies eventually) AND she pays absolutely no consequences! It’s a one-two punch of frustration and that’s a huge downer, even if Fry is obliviously happy at the end.

You fucking killed Gunny! Love the show

Bender getting busted shoplifting leaves me in stitches every time. Possibly a reference to this Harpo Marx scene in Animal Crackers.https://youtu.be/e9vNono2CXo

I have never tried anchovies but this episode always makes me want to try. -- Since probably the summer after 9th or 10th grade I have that recurring dream every now and then where I've not gone to a class for the entire semester and some big assignment or test is happening and I'm like "oh my god I'm so fucked." At this point I'm one exam away from finishing my university undergrad degree and I'm sure I've had the dream sometime this past school year. -- I'm with Hank, this episode always bums me out a bit and makes me feel sad for Fry being robbed and basically bankrupted by Mom (even though he ends up happy in the end anyway).

PPS: We should get a We Hate Movies x What a Cartoon collab! Animation Damnation style.

If you want some pretty good pizza around SF/DC/Peninsula, check out Toto's. I think either the San Mateo or San Bruno locations would be closest. They even have an achnovies option. Wasn't a fan of it myself, but the pizza itself is probably one of the better more "authentic" pizza places around the bay. PS: What place in SF was Matt saying? It faded out before the full name was said...was it Northbeach Pizza?

or creamed corn, which is delicious

Matt Bixler! Hello!

Whenever a TV show does the "Oh no I forgot to study" trope, I'm always reminded of Top Secret! Nick Rivers passes out from getting tortured by Nazi's and has a dream that he forgot to study for a test, then wakes up relieved that it was all a dream and he's still getting tortured.

You guys left out 'liver and onions' from the list of hacky gross joke foods.

I actually realized this while I was editing the podcast.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear you like it!

Wait Mom didn't want to kill a bunch of kids for anchovie oil, she says the oil would lubricate the robots PERMANENTLY, putting Mom's robot oil out of business. She just wants the anchovies so she can destroy them, ensuring none of her enemies shove the gene in those urchins and kill her business right? It's just her warped perspective that anyone would of course exploit a bunch of kids to achieve their goal because that's how she'd do it.

I think the reason Mom didn’t try to continue to outbid Fry at the auction is because after he just completely made up a number, she realized he has no concept of money and was caught up in the excitement of bidding. Once it became clear that Fry was going to just keep bidding, it would be more cost effective for Mom to just try and steal the anchovies with schemes, then potentially spend billions of dollars in a bidding war.

Only once have I ever heard someone order an anchovi pie. It was just a few days ago at a bar & grill(e) style restaurant. I made sure to note that, as it seemed quite unusual. Unfortunately the restaurant did not stock anchovies.

This is actually my first time watching the series. From the way everything is described, it seems like much of what I'm loving about the show so far is mostly abandoned in future seasons.

I like that this episode is a chance for Fry to actually mourn being displaced in time. His initial reaction in the pilot is a joyous one, when I think most people would probably be mortified to find out everyone they knew and loved was dead, and long dead at that. And of course its frustratingly hilarious and reminds me of the many episodes of The Simpsons where the family comes so close to achieving financial security, but they undermine themselves some how in the end. Though arguably Homer was never as dumb as Fry in missing out on a large sum of money.

I spent more time in yogurtland than ever when that Mario promotion was running.

I'm hesitant to listen to this one, because I'm currently on a diet and I would love to go for a an anchovy pizza right now. Yes, I'm aware its only 10am. Also, yes, you need to "do a doug" ;)

Awesome podcast! As you may have guessed from my profile pic, this is one of my favourite episodes of the show. Unlike The Simpsons, I watched Futurama from day one, and this episode was the first one that I remember hitting me on a deep emotional level - something that Futurama was able to do along most of its run. I remember specifically sympathising with Fry when he goes on a that 90s spending spree, not because I was particularly nostalgic - nostalgia wasn't a massive fad at the time and I was too young for that - but because I too, given a gillion dollars, would probably surround myself in crap that make me happy, close myself in a room and never get out (things, not friends!). Also, like Henry, I felt so bad seeing Fry become a billionnaire and being robbed of everything

By the way, Henry - I am from your home town so I love hearing your Orange Park and Middleburg stories! Keep em coming!

Thanks for doing Talking Futurama guys! Futurama is my all time favorite show and means a lot to me. It quite seriously saved my life. I went over to Iraq a couple of times back in the early 00's and came back a little messed up. Anyways, I discovered the Futurama DVD's and used them to get me through some really dark times. On those sleepless nights when the dreams got pretty intense, I would put on a Futurama DVD and fall peacefully asleep while listening to it. Thanks for doing this. It means a lot.

I'm not 100% sure, but didn't Rob Paulsen have to stop voice acting for a while due to throat cancer? I think the point about wacky voices vs. good actors stands, but I just thought Paulsen had another reason for going on hiatus.

You guys ready for some math? Don't worry it's easy. So, I wiki'd Ancient Egyptian Algebra, and from what I could gather it's actually not that complex. Basically Egypt created very basic but important aspects of math such as using Least Common Denominator to make fractions work better and solving for a mystery number, as in solve for x. So, assuming my theory is right, the joke is "Fry is dreaming about a very hard class... that teaches math you would learn in grade school." Fry will soon be dumber than he is shown now, so that joke does... add up, get it? Uh... I'll just leave.
