Talking Futurama - When Aliens Attack

The past haunts Fry yet again when a 1999 beer-spilling accident robs the planet Omicron Persei 8 of the Single Female Lawyer season finale 1000 years later. With the fate of the world at stake, the Planet Express crew has no choice but to craft their own version of the episode in order to appease some angry aliens. But can they possibly capture Single Female Lawyer's spunky vulnerability? The answer to this question and more can be found in this week's episode!

Talking Futurama - When Aliens Attack

I'm shocked and appalled that a '90s movie would kill a comedic gay character!

Harvey did die in Independence Day during this city destruction sequence. "Ohhhh crapppp."

Stew Shearer

Actually, yes. We just got done with a whole Retronauts recording weekend and this was the day after.

When Ally McBeal first started getting popular on Fox, my teacher in Health Class made us watch some "edutainment" about bulimia which starred one Calista Flockhart, so even Hollywood must have felt she was perfect for the skinny roles. As best I can tell from her filmography, it was an episode of a TV series called Lifestories: Families in Crisis that originally aired back in 1992. The only thing I remember of it was a scene in which Flockhart's character parked her parents station wagon in a wooded area and had a junkfood pigout in the back of it with the rear door open surrounded by stacks of pizza, ice cream, pie and whatever. It was a very sensationalized portrait of bulimia.

Were you guys a bit tired when you recorded this episode?

Jessica Lovejoy

Since no one mentioned it, the actress in Independence Day 1 and 2 is Vivica A Fox, not Angela Bassett. As a former horny teenager, I never confused the two very pretty ladies :3

One of my favorite episodes , especially of the first run I was able to watch.

The Hubble telescope was a weird recurring joke on Eek! the cat too. Nasa would see some earth ending cosmic danger with it then a character usually Eek! having been knocked into space would shift it to empty space and theyd think everything was normal.

I never watched Ally McBeal, but I'm a huge fan of Supergirl, and Calista was really good on it. I don't think the decision to have her take a backseat was entirely a budget thing, however, since production moved from LA to Vancouver when it became a CW show. A big part of the decision was her wanting to stay with family and not move up to Canada for like 9 months of the year, but she did appear in the first couple episodes of season 2 as well as the finale. -- I'm sure the idea of aliens receiving our radio signals was inspired by the Voyager Golden Record, where the probes have sound and images meant to display what life on Earth is like, with the intent of being seen by beings out in the cosmos. Obviously it's not radio waves being picked up unintentionally, but I feel like it sparked the question of "what if our broadcasts were seen out there too?"

As someone who watched Ally McBeal until about the 4th season, I can confirm she could be promiscuous. She once slept with a guy at a car wash without even saying a word to him. Not only did she kiss eventual Futurama guest star Lucy Liu, she also made out with Courtney Thorne-Smith. But the show was obsessed with sex more than anything, half the episodes dealt with sexual harassment or sordid affairs or a women's mud wrestling ring (yes, really). When it wasn't obsessed with sex, Ally was endlessly moaning about finding her One True Love. Most of the cases were setups to make some point about finding love, complete with maudlin piano cues and a montage of Ally wondering the streets forlorn and alone. Even at the time the show was controversial among feminists. Time magazine infamously had an issue with Ally on the cover that said "Is Feminism Dead?" The criticism was Ally McBeal was obsessed with finding love, frequently unprofessional, and flighty. The short skirts and ample cleavage on some of the female cast wasn't exactly progressive either. I did think Lucy Liu, Lisa Nicole-Carson, Jane Krakowski, and later Portia DeRossi were hilarious though.

No, there's one more (for now), the production season 1 finale, "Fry and the Slurm Factory." They might do another season but likely not until after a short break, and then probably a season of another animated show...my money is on Mission Hill, though I could see King of the Hill, too...or combine them...King of the Mission Hill?

Andrew Bouvier

Is this the last Futurama episode they're putting out?

Stu Lash

Contact is a scifi movie where aliens get one of our radio signals. And unfortunately, it was Hitler.

THIS IS CETI ALPHA V (boy, i hope someone got fired for that blunder!) :-P https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhu5V8VRxFU

Into the Wormhole

speaking of Lucy Liu, she'll be a Futurama guest star in upcoming episodes!

Omikron Perssei 8 is a reference to the actual star system Omikron Perssei, which is indeed about 1000 light years away from us. If you ever look up the constellation Persius, look for three stars near each other, that's it. Take a look... and hopefully they don't invade our planet.
