Talking Futurama - Fry and the Slurm Factory

On this week's dangerously addictive podcast, we explore the world of Slurm as Fry wins a contest to find out how his favorite soda is made—and ends up discovering its deadly secret. Along the way, we meet the original party worm and some disgusting little men, learn how bottle caps can be a massive choking hazard, and say the word "slurmhole" a whole lot (sorry). This is the last episode of Talking Futurama for now, but stay tuned for more great bonus podcasts, and our next mini-series! Thanks so much for your continued support!

Talking Futurama - Fry and the Slurm Factory

I always enjoy watching this episode. In part because i love willy wonka and the chocolate factory but also because this is a very alien episode. A lot of futurama doesn't deal with the fact earth has had contact with aliens. You mostly only see humans and robots walking around on earth but Slurm is a product sold and advertised on earth and yet we never see any of those guys walking around. So I'm glad they went off and had fun in an alien filled episode. The hardest part to watch is Fry craving a can of Slurm and then later continuing to drink the Slurm after the discover its secret.

The scene where the slurm queen sucks fresh slurm directly from her slurm hole made my fiancé throw up.

Oh, and just to randomly point something out, Pokémon: The First Movie doesn't literally have a "Who's That Pokémon?" interlude, but it does have a scene where Team Rocket are looking at silhouettes of cloned Pokémon on Mewtwo's machine, and identifying them as they see them (including the infamous moment where they show a Scyther silhouette and they shout "Alakazam!"). That's probably what Bob's remembering.

I know I'll miss this series! Looking forward to the deleted scenes episode.

I second Talking Futurama having a permanent slot. It has been fun listening to this commentary and revisiting this show :)

Recently they started rebranding Dr. Pepper in Japan with a '50s/neon motif, and one of the slogan on some of the bottles is 'You'll Be Addicted!'

Jesus, how many fish did Young Henry have?

Matthew Hardaway

I count at least 50 times the word Slurm is said

I can't believe you didn't clip "Tell them I hate them!" Not only is that line of the show, it might be line of the series for me. It's the one that has always remained the most memorable for me. Something about the way Farnsworth says it, so forceful and mean, and it comes out of no where. Plus I was kind of sick of Wonka parodies when I first saw this episode so I kind of felt the same way. ------------------------- If you guys are able to unlock your second annual mini series, I would like to propose that Talking Futurama become a permanent occupier of one such slot and the other revolving. At least until after season 4. This has been real fun and it just makes me want to continue reliving the show.

Yeah, I always assumed it was a Slurge parody since the style of the can is similar and both are green. Plus Slurge was the "extreme" soda. When Coca-Cola brought it back a few years ago via Amazon I bought a case. I had to give most of it away as it was just way too syrupy and sweet for my taste as I have basically ceased consuming soda since the 90s.

Does anyone else think Slurm is supposed to be Surge from the 90s? I actually found some in a gas station on a road trip a few months ago. I didn't buy but I've kind of been thinking about it and feeling slightly addicted to something I haven't had in 20 years.

Loved the Talking Futurama series, and I'm looking forward to whatever show comes next (as well as whenever we get to do more of Futurama)! -- This may be my single favourite episode of the series - definitely of the first season, anyway. Farnsworth's "tell them I hate them!" and Bender's "shut the hell up" made me rewatch the bits numerous times, even having seen the episode so much, and Fry's "that's not soon enough!" is part of my everyday vernacular. -- I love how stupid and addicted to Slurm Fry is by this point that he can't stop drinking it, even seeing the disgusting method of its production right in front of his eyes. It's kind of like thinking about how awful the production of meat is, and still continuing to eat it (which I am totally guilty of). More broadly, it's really any situation where we know how bad something is, but we continue to do it (which definitely fits with the soda-themed episode) and everyone can relate to that in one way or another. -- This is probably the first time I've rewatched the episode since learning about Spuds MacKenzie, so the joke of Slurms makes a lot more sense to me.
