What A Cartoon! - The July (And Some Of August) Schedule

To paraphrase Mungo Jerry: In the summertime, when the weather is hot, you stretch right up and LISTEN TO CARTOON PODCASTS. And What A Cartoon! is plugging away on some of our best episodes yet! Unlike its sister series, Talking Simpsons, y'all don't know what episodes are coming next so if you want to prepare and watch ahead on the next five subjects of our podcast!

In order, we'll be covering:

Wallace & Gromit "The Wrong Trousers"

Chosen by one of our premium patrons, we're doing the Oscar-winning short starring the greatest stop-motion duo in history. We'll be digging into the incredibly English pair of adventurers and their lovely contraptions in their second outing, "The Wrong Trousers." If you're in the US, this is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, but it's pretty widely available elsewhere.

Xavier: Renegade Angel "The 6th Teat of Good Intentions"

Things are about to get VERY weird as we watch the strange Adult Swim series from the creators of Wonder Showzen! Xavier: Renegade Angel is the bad dream you can't wake up from, and also has some of the most beautiful wordplay in cartoon history. We dig deep into Xavier's mindhole to flip lids coast-to-coast, and you can find the series streaming on Adult Swim's website or get the DVD for cheap!

Big O "A Legacy of Amadeus"

Cast in the name of God, ye not guilty... of watching this awesome anime with us. A hit on Cartoon Network and even revived for Adult Swim, we revisit this cult hit anime of the late '90s together. It's noir meets mecha meets Batman in this first season episode of the series which isn't currently streaming anywhere official (you'll find it in a number of unofficial places), but you can find the fantastic Blu-ray right now!

Daria "The Misery Chick"

We've covered Beavis & Butt-Head, so now we move onto the spinoff that has almost nothing to do with it, Daria! MTV's animated half-hour spoke to so many youths of the 1990s and we'll be digging into how it looked into the lives of high school kids in everytown USA. You can find the season one finale "The Misery Chick" on Hulu though sorry to say all the original music has been stripped out but we'll try our best to replicate it.

The Tick (1994) "The Tick Vs The Tick"

Before the live action show, and before that OTHER live action show is the Saturday morning original that was a refreshingly comedic look at the world of comic books! Yes, it's the Spoon-tastic The Tick from 1994 and the first season episode where the Tick fights a mad bomber and another guy fighting for his character name! It's not currently streaming, but you can grab the DVD or finding it unofficially streaming with a quick Google search!

Those are the next five podcasts we're doing on What A Cartoon! so feel free to start watching ahead at your leisure. As always, you'll hear al of these a week early and ad-free if you're a Patreon supporter! And don't forget, if you want to watch Hulu with a free 30-day trial that helps support our podcast, you could always sign up at tiny.cc/tshulu!

Thanks as always,

Henry

What A Cartoon! - The July (And Some Of August) Schedule

Comments

I’ve watched Daria many times over but never with original music since it was on the DVD they released. I would be interested in hearing some of the original music in between and during scenes.

Dave Molner

Oh wait. They do have Paprika! But it isn't listed under anime. Oh brother.

Christopher McDougall

Sony's Crackle service suprisingly has episodes of the Tick cartoon legally for stream. At least the last time I checked they did. They also happen to be the only place I know where you can find a legal stream of Satoshi Kon's Paprika and Urusei Yatsura's "Beautiful Dreamer" movie. Hmm. Just checked and it looks like I was mistaken. They have the first live action Tick series, not the animated one. And they no longer have Paprika. They do have the UY movie though, and Jin-Roh. Sometimes you can find a gem or two on that service, but I really hate the frequent ads, especially in the middle of movies.

Christopher McDougall

Well I'm chuffed to bits to hear that you are doing The Wrong Trousers! It is quite possibly one of the greatest pieces of animation of all time!

Andrew Gillies

And so he says to me, 'you wanna be a bad guy?' And I say, 'yeah, baby! I wanna be bad!' And I says, 'surf's up, space ponies! I'm making gravy without the lumps!' Aaaaahahahahahaha! You'll never prove a thing, copper. I'm just a part-time electrician. I-I-I... bad is good, baby! Down with government!

mavrick

YES on all of these! I'm also very glad you chose "The Misery Chick" for the podcast since it was the one I used to show people to get into Daria.

If I may make a recommendation for another comic book one - Batman: The Brave & The Bold, 'Legends of the Dark Mite'. Written by the legendary Paul Dini, starring Paul Reubens as Bat-Mite. It offers a deep dive into Batman history, fandom, and even other cartoons - most of the episode is a homage to the classic Looney Tunes episode 'Duck Amuck'. Highly recommended, I think you'd both enjoy it.

Chris J

Wallace & Gromit? YES. It'll be difficult in audio though since 90% of the gags are visual...

Chris J

Wallace and Gromit?! HELL. FUCKING. YES. They were my childhood!

Harry Thornton

I still have my old Wallace and Gromit VHS’s! I fucking loved them sooo much!

Tyler the Destroyer

I wore out my VHS for wrong trousers as a kid, such a fantastically animated short, the train scene never fails to floor me every time i watch it.

I look forward to hot takes on every single Tick incarnation.
